As you play through the game, you'll happen upon several espers/summons. Some are found through the main storyline, and some are hidden and must be discovered. The hows and whys of this are in another thread. At the time of this (edited) post, JP has nine summons (Siren, Ifrit, Golem, Shiva, Ramuh, Diablo, Carbuncle, Odin, Titan), and Global has the first five.

Each may be trained by giving it magicite shards of varying sizes and colours, and they gain levels from this. Each level gives the esper points to allocate to a colored table which may give it stats, abilities, spells, and more, which are given to the person who equips the summon. Magicite shards can be gained from events, purchased in some boxes in certain events, exploration maps, or (only in Japan for now) in a specific Vortex Dungeon.

For now, each Summon has two ranks, 1* and 2*. You will start out with the 1*, and after maxing out the level (30), you can venture back to where you found the summon and fight a stronger version of it, which will upgrade your summon to 2*, also expanding the upgrades which it can each. For now, the maximum level of a 2* Summon is 40.

The following pictures and text accompanying them are not my creations. They are also the upgraded 2* espers, so your starting espers may be lacking some of the outer plates.

Siren seems to give a wide range of stat boosts, slightly specialising in Spirit (magic defense, I think). She also gives a few protective spells and some minor status effects. Siren.jpg

Ifrit seems to strike a balance between physical offense and defense, with the upgraded version also teaching Plant/Beast Killer, and some minor buffs.

Golem is straight up tanky. Some attack, some minor stats, a whole lotta pdefense. Also gives a provoke, which will be handy for your tank, as well as cover and Stone Killer, both super handy. Screw those tombstones. Golem.jpg

Mmm, Shiva. So sexy, and my favorite animation. Ahem. Shiva's stats and skills are well rounded too, leaning slightly towards overall defense. Gives a few debuffs, including magicbreak at the high end. Shiva.jpg

Ramuh! I choose you! Wait, this isn't Pikachu. Ramuh has a lot of spells including Osmose (a real mvp here), a lot of debuffs. Ramuh.jpg

Diablo has some pretty good stats and especially magic/mp Diablo.jpg , but he really shines once he gets his 2* and unlocks his outer skills. Demon Slayer, Manslayer (so handy), Mug, Decrease Encounter Rate, Osmose, and more.

A question about espers. After finishing raising them to max (2*, max level), how much SP do you end up with? I've been wondering how careful I need to be in selecting which plates to unlock...

That's a really good question. I just managed to max out Golem at level 40/2*, and I noticed that I don't have enough SP to clear out his table. You may want to be selective on what you unlock in 2*!

On the other hand, this also leads me to believe that summons may gain a 3* at some point, or there may be a way to add SP to espers in the future beyond training.

I see. Thanks for the heads up, man. Knowing if there's enough SP to get everything is exactly what I wanted to know.

As you mentioned, you don't get enough SP to fully max them out. I suggest that you spend SP for skills rather than the stat ups and save the rest. The stats give minimal gain, I believe it was 1% of the esper's stat get added to your units. Diablos I know for a fact that you don't even have enough SP for all the skills. That said IMO mug is the least useful. I also know that Siren doesn't get enough SP for all her 2* skills as well.

    Plan ahead.

So has anyone went through to find out which way to fill each of them is best? Like Ifrit, is it best to max his attack and then get plant killer and beast killer and then go defense, or do you want to go for power break so that way people don't waste SP on stuff they don't need. I know each esper is going to be better for one class or another.

Just wondering the thoughts on this.
