Hello there everybody! Hope you are all doing well.

In this installment we'll take a look at the new Final Fantasy 2 units and how they fare in the meta.
Yesterday I took a WPM (Word per Minute) typing test and was surprise to hit about ~100. Never knew how fast I can actually type.

In regard to the DQ review, it'll be up within the next days. I used up a good chunk of time last week to work on a video on my YT channel, which took around 9~10 hours in total.
So yeah, expect the DQ review soon! It'll be a bit shorter though since it features 4 units.

PS: 19th october! Mark the date as I shall have my 21st birthday. I'm not sure yet if I'll make a special post or not.

Banner Review: Wild Rose Firion & Dark Knight Leon by Memel0rd

    Wild Rose Firion:
    [IMG]5*
    [IMG]6*
    [IMG]7*

TMR: Red Sword (Sword) - 135 ATK, Two-Handed, 1.5x AVG variance, restore 25% of the damage dealt as HP
STMR: Weapons Specialist (Materia) - Increase ATK (60%)
Increase physical damage against birds, humans, and stone monsters (75%)

    Overview:
    Firion
! While many do think he is really bad I do believe he isn't absolutely crud and may even be useful, too!

Firion's base stats are generally amazing with high HP, DEF, SPR and ATK. Even his MP stat is good. In terms of his passives he is quite similar to his original version where he gains a ton of stat boosts depending on the weapons you equip, even MAG though that's not what we're aiming for. Since he is TDH focused we can only utilise one and since we use his TMR that'll be swords. With a sword and latent abilities he has a total of 60% HP/MP, 50% DEF, 80% SPR as well as 150% ATK and 150% TDH. His HP can be a bit low but luckily our build features two Storm Kickers pumping it up a lot.
Additionally Firion gets 9 75% killers! Against Humans, machines, stones, birds, insects, plants, beasts, demons and dragons... and depending on which weapon an additional 25% in human, bird or stone. With a sword that means a 100% human killer. This is a nice trait though can be overvalued quite easily.
He's resistant against poison and petrification, leaving much to be desired in terms of status ailment protection.

Firion is capable of W-/T-casting all of his abilities, making it easy to utilise his kit to its full potential, though that doesn't stop him from having a set of niche abilities that are either outclassed or generally said not worth using:
    - Rising Fist
    - Plundering Lance
    - Quick Arrow, too high demand with only a 1200% modifier per cast
    - Accelerated Arrow, set up for Quick Arrow and therefore falls into the same category
    - Shield Blow, unfortunately starts off with a 50% DEF break and 2 turns later reaches a 1 turn 70% break
    - Spinning Axe, if you need the LB Fillrate this can actually be good and is a good arena AoE chain

Outside of these abilities, all of his abilities actually have a use! And all of his chains are stardust chains.

Firion doesn't only have versatility with killers but also in the elements he uses. He has three different imbues that all have a 350% modifier, chain with their respective element and imbue as well as 100% imperil for 5 turns each! These elements are water, wind and holy, which is a good selection and also enables him to change element mid-fight which rarely can be beneficial.

Followed up by another set of three, Firion has access to AoE killer buffs. These have a mere 150% modifier but they do buff all the 9 innate killers by 25% , each ability 3 killers. This can not only be helpful for him but also for additional finishers if you run them.
These groups of killers are as followed:
    - Bird, Insect, Plants
    - Humans, Machines, Stones
    - Beasts, Demons, Dragons
The buff lasts for 5 turns and it easy to fit into any rotation without sacrificing a lot of damage.

For his main chain outside of CD abilities, we have Fynn's Blossom, a backloaded chain with a 580% modifier. After all the possible modifier buffs it goes up to a .... 1180% modifier. Which isn't exactly all that great in a meta where we have TDW units running around with 2000%+ modifiers almost consistently. But don't worry, we'll get to the good part soon.

Three seems to be the theme of his kit as he also has three different CD abilities! Actually with Latent Abilities it's 4 but pssssht.

Pride of Resistance being the first one with a 6 turn cooldown but available at Turn 1. It increases his own ATK by 200% for 4 turns (can't be dispelled) as well as his bird, human and stone killers by 50% for 4 turns. This in combination of his LB and later CD abilities pretty much ensures permanent increase to these 3 killers.
Additionally it also grants him T-Cast for the next 3 turns though that isn't really needed due to us utilising his LB a lot.

Keeping up the theme of three, Bloody Rose is available at Turn 3. It's nothing too spectacular but it's a backloaded chain with an effective 1070% modifier which also increases the modifier of Fynn's Blossom by 100% for... 3 turns.

His Latent Ability CD is also up at turn 3 and also is a backloaded chain, though only 870% mods this time around. In return it fills up your LB gauge by 16 (basically half his LB gauge) and allows us to use his LB a second time early on. Its 3 turn T-Cast enable yet again isn't all that beneficial since we're going to use his LB a lot.

Sadly his last CD ability has nothing to do with the number 3. Press F.
Available at Turn 7 it's yet ANOTHER backloaded chain with a 1480% modifier and also a 3 turn self 75% bird, human and stone killer buff.

Lastly the good part: his Limit Burst.
It can perfectly chain with a dupe and has a high base modifier of 3450% alongside his CG Protagonist passive that immediately grants him a full LB gauge at the start of the fight. It comes with a self 4 turn bird, human and stone killer that last 4 turns as well as a 3 turn T-Cast enable, meaning you'll likely always have T-Cast up.

How does he fare in the meta?
On paper Firion does horribly. His damage looks atrocious due to the missing killer passives but the Dyingatheist13 made an informative post about some comparisons with killers to other chainers: https://redd.it/deeamy
TL;DR he still won't outdamage any of them in the long run however it does make him a lot better than his initial impression. Especially against humans, birds and stones he has really solid damage output.

In my opinion his best niche is his Turn 1. Meetmeonmars demonstrated that quite well in his latest video where he used external setup for imbues and imperils to make use of Firion's Turn 1 Limit burst. Since Firion buffs his own killers BEFORE dealing the damage, with the right tools he can be a massive FTKO machine that way especially considering most of our recent chainers have a very slow start with 1-3 turns of dealing mediocre to bad damage at first.
If you're really into FTKOs, units like Ignacio for example can help a lot.
Since FTKOs are partially almost all the content except for OBAMA trial clears, this might be very attractive for many of you and definitely makes Firion worth a mention.

However if we look at longer fights that are coming such as Shinryu or basically all content outside of 1-2 turn fights, Firion does fall off quite significantly. As I said in the beginning though the gap will not be as huge as displayed.

If you aren't into early turning content there is no point in pulling for Firion. If you do, it's highly suggested to use a whale friend or use his STMR if you're a whale yourself. His STMR grants him the chance to equip a stronger weapon such as Ignacio's or NG Jake's STMR. Perhaps even Bahamut Tear if you whaled on the VP banner. It's up to you.

His TMR sounds fun with draining 25% of all physical damage but not many units can actually take advantage of the TMR while being considerably close to other meta units.

    Build + Maths:
    Red Sword (135 ATK, 1.5x AVG Variance) + 30% ATK/SPR/MP, 50% TDH, 30% LB Damage
    Prishe's Hairpin (45 ATK, 10% HP/MP)
    Catastrophic Vest (30 ATK/SPR, 50 DEF, 15% HP)
    Storm Kickers x2 (90 ATK, 40% HP, 20 DEF, 30% LB Damage)
War Goddess' Insignia (30% ATK/LB Damage)
Heart Overcoming Hatred (50% LB Damage)
    Dark Knight's Knowledge (30% ATK, 50% TDH)
    Buster Style (100% TDH)

    Dark Knight Leon:
    [IMG]5*
    [IMG]6*
    [IMG]7*

TMR: Defender (Sword) - 135 ATK, 20% DEF, 10% Physical Evasion
STMR: Dark Knight's Authority (Materia) - Increase ATK (50%) when equipped with a sword
Increase ATK (50%) when equipped with a heavy armor

    Overview:
The guy who joined at the end of the game and had almost no character development. Though that goes for almost all FF2 characters.

His basestats are... almost exactly the same as Firion's so not much you can do wrong in that department. Passive wise he has a lot of DEF for a chainer I must say. With his own TMR his passives are 60% HP, 50% MP, 110% DEF with 10% phys dodge as well as 170% ATK and 100% TDW alongside the 6x chain cap, which so far looks pretty sexy I must say.
He's resistant against sleep, disease, confusion and for some reason charm but that's definitely better than not being resisted to charm, I just don't quite understand why.

Leon can W-Cast all of his abilities and T-Cast all except for one of his CD abilities, Black Executioner.
He also has a short list of moves that are too self-explanatory or niche:
    - Vanishing Blade, ST Dispel that can be fit into the rotation at any point
    - Phantom II
    - Betrayal Blade, only 50% DEF/SPR break
    - Depravity Blade, only 50% ATK/MAG break
    - Dark Prison, inferior imperil
    - Dark Flow, inferior to Spread of Darkness II

This leaves us with 3 non-CD abilities.

As an edgy teenager any ability without the term "dark" in it isn't a real ability. Black is acceptable though.
All of his chains are AT chains.

Two of his non-CD abilities are mostly for setting himself up. Dark Knight Charge has a backloaded 1200% modifier while increasing the modifier of Dark Corruption by 300% for 2 turns whereas his latent ability Spread of Darkness II has a horrible 150% modifier that does however imbue him with Dark for 3 turns and add 50%, 100% and 200% modifiers depending on the turn to Dark Corruption, making it a good option to use frequently.

Dark Corruption is his best damaging move that can be T-Casted and has a backloaded 1300% modifier as well as a 120% dark imperil. After all the modifier boosts it ends up at a total 2400% / 2500% / 2700% modifier depending on which turn you are after using Spread of Darkness. Alongside his high ATK through TDW this can deal a ton of damage with a lot of burst damage.

Dark Servant's Blade is also T-Castable however you will actually want to use this as a single cast to take advantage of Leon's TDW. It has a backloaded 4000% modifier with a 120% dark imperil and a self 250% ATK buff for 1 turn BEFORE applying the damage, which makes it a powerful burst tool that requires 0 set up other than an imbue or a dark weapon.
    It's available at Turn 6.

His only ability in our rotation that doesn't have the name Dark is Black Executioner and can only be W-Casted. It's available at Turn 1 with an 8 turn cooldown and is deals no damage at all.
However, it does grant Leon quuuite a lot! Not only does he gain T-Cast for the following 2 turns but also a 250% ATK buff, 100 MP per turn for 3 turns , a 120% dark imperil AND a ST 70% fullbreak. The latter can be really neat if your breaker is a bit slower or you want him to do something else first. Or not waste his CD break. There are many options. It can also be great once it's up again and your breaker actually died.

His Limit Burst while having Dark in its name (Darkness Override) isn't edgy enough to be good, though it's not bad either. It has a self 4 turn undispellable 250% ATK buff and an AoE 4 turn 120% dark imperil with a 3450% modifier though only 6 hits. It can be used if you want higher damage in successive turns but you're also fine just skipping it.

How does he fare in the meta?
    Dark Knight Leon
feels basically like a worse version of Riku from Kingdom Hearts.

They focus on the same element, both being TDW units.
They have the same imperil strength and both are quite edgy.
Their stats are relatively similar but Riku deals higher damage.
Their damage difference isn't high but outside of Leon's 70% fullbreak he most definitely feels like a worse version.

However that being said, Dark Knight Leon deals surprisingly high damage being right between Bartz and Lightning, which is really high for current standards. More importantly his Turn 2 and Turn 3 burst is quite outstanding and the only thing that holds him back are his relatively awful off turns that deal quite pitiful damage.

Similar to Firion I do think Leon does deserve some praise for his high Turn 2-3 damage. Not the same niche as an actual FTKO but it's still higher than what most other chainers can do at these turns.

Other than that he really isn't anything special though his TMR is!
A sword with 10% evasion and 20% DEF (for attacks that bypass accuracy) sounds really sexy and can be used perfectly on units like Wilhelm and Sieghard. Unfortunately both of the upcoming meta tanks, Galuf and CG Warrior of Light, won't be interested in this TMR unless you use their STMRs.

His STMR is also the only 100% ATK materia I know of as of right now. It requires both a sword and heavy armor though unfortunately there aren't many good heavy armors in the current game outside of STMRs. It'll likely be the best choice but won't make a huge difference in the end.

Also if I may point out, his sprite is probably one of the lamest ever. His effects are barely moving and his actual character during the idle sprite isn't moving at all.

    Build + Maths:
    Longinus (FFBE) (190 ATK)
    Defender (135 ATK, 20% DEF) + 40% ATK/DEF/HP, 50% TDW

    Conclusion:
This banner can easily be skipped without second thoughts.
Both units have their respective niches though unless you're really interested in them or love FF2 (which many don't but I do appreciate it) then don't even pull.
Leon's TMR is the best thing on the banner and even that won't be a gamechanger for future units.
Firion's main issue are his low modifiers. If they were slightly higher he could have had a chance in the meta seeing how close he can get in some of his killer aspects. His kit I really like but sadly his ATK as well as his modifiers are too low to turn him into a meta unit, which also hinders his future proofness until he gets enhancements by dropping off more quickly than others.
Leon in terms of average damage sadly feels like a worse version of Riku, which is in my opinion the worst feeling out of any. Units shouldn't be straight up outclassed but should always have some niche as tiny as it is. One ability like an Entrust can change that.
If you don't have any hard feelings, easy skip!

That's it! Hope you enjoyed it and as I said, expect the DQ review soon! And let's hope there won't be any 4 unit banners in the future with unnecessarily complicated kits to math out.

    Have a nice day!

Thanks by the review Meme o/

If not by my crazy spent of Lapis to get Eleven (Only possible because I got him on the silver keys), I would spend my resources to get Firion. I remember when I first got to play ffbe before quit because the lack of content, Firion was my favorite unit.

Firion was also one of my favourite units when he got his enhancements. Even with his 6 star I remember using him a lot because it was so easy to use Chizuru + Firion.

Thanks Meme. Already planned to skip but now for sure. As always, the hard work is much appreciated.

Will point out that WRFirion and DKLeon are effectively the same for OTK when the enemy has turn 1 mitigation, or even turn 2 mitigation. However, by turn 2, Regina catches up and by turn 3, Esther and Radiant Lightning catch up. By turn 4, almost every other meta damager catches up.

Character Desing is not about the unit kit and such? (Since it is not the visual, since you have a sprite rating)

So, how can Firion's design be considered good?
Has multiple weapon masteries, but is TDH and his TM is a 2h weapon.
Is a LB focused unit, but has barely and LB support (his only innate support is 2 auto LB)
He is one of the worst of Alim's design.

I'll show my love to FF2 by playing the PSP version instead. I wonder if it's ported to PC already?

I agree with this. The killer is okay, but multiple weapon mastery while tdh? Nope. This is *7 era, not activating tmr ability is rather wasteful and not everyone want to whale for his stmr.

Draw 1 DK Leon from Tickets. At least they'll be good for KM event this time round.

Pulled on this unit for nostalgic factor over Firion since he carried me through a lot of things when I just started. Ended up with 2xLeon and 1xFirion.

To me, the thing that annoys me the most is Firion being stuck with his TMR even though he has a great passive and equipment choice for many interesting build.

TL; DR the units are nothing to write home about, their only "niche" versus a lot of slow meta chainers is already covered much better by Regina...

I tried to get 3*-base Firion to work back in December 2017 but couldn't really get anything out of him... :(

Though your Leon is one of very few bonus units on my FL, I'm really grateful for him! ::up::

Somebody has to ask: what do the upcoming latent abilities do for these two units?

It's sad, because I love the idea of a unit with awesome versatility in killers. If his mods were better, and oof he had a much higher Atk stat overall, I feel like he could be a monster.
