Happy Tuesday and my uni stuff is getting wilder and wilder by each week.
I've sent one of my professors two essays that I had to write over the weekend in a single mail and apparently he didn't read either the e-mail subject or took a look at the e-mail itself as he signed me off for one of the two classes.
Either way, together we shall question why this banner is the way it is and review yet another two damage dealers that not only copy other units' kits but also themselves!

Seriously, these copy paste spam of damage dealers is getting out of hand.

PS: I've played a lot of Trials of Mana, great game! For those who liked Seiken Densetsu 3 it's definitely worth picking up.

    Lezard Valeth:
    [IMG]5*
    [IMG]6*
    [IMG]7*

TMR: Lezard's Cloak (Robe) - 28 DEF, 55 MAG, 42 SPR, 50% Dark Resistance (Lezard Valeth only)

    STMR: Lezard's Tome (Rod) - 168 MAG, 20% MP, 50% MTDH

    Overview:
I welcome you to basic mage kit #69! This time with the sudden change from Quad-Cast back to Triple-Cast. Quality over quantity, right?

Base stat wise Lezard Valeth is pretty standard with decent HP, high MP/SPR and very high MAG. And his passives aren't even for defensive purposes with a total of 60% HP, 50% DEF, 110% SPR as well as a nice 210% MAG with 100% MTDH. While his bulk isn't amazing for a MTDH unit, due to his decent bases it can be fixed somewhat easily through Sweet Luka's TMR. Sadly he lacks a gust passive, too.
He's resistant against paralyze, confusion and charm, which are all great protections and leave out only sleep and petrification for the harmful ailments. Additionally he has some elemental resistances with 30% fire, lightning and 100% dark. But the best part about his passives is arguably his triple 75% killer against humans, fairies and reapers, which definitely cover a wider variety of bosses.

Lezard Valeth can T-Cast all of his abilities but has some generally niche abilities with his three different low modifier abilities that have their respective 80% imperil for back ups as well as a ST 30% HP revive.

He does have a tiny bit of support with an AOE 150% LB fillrate buff + DEF/SPR break immunity, but a ton of teams will already have those covered.

Which leaves his kit with... 5 abilities. And 3 of them are his chaining abilities, which all belong to the Chaos Wave Awakened chain and cover 3 different elements: fire, lightning and dark. It's a good selection.
All of them have backloaded modifiers that start at a minimum of 2500% and end up at a total of 5500%. Considering you have permanent access to T-Cast, those are some nasty mods, but require two turns to get to their max. So upon death, you definitely lose out on a good chunk of damage.

Then Lezard Valeth has a set of two CD abilities, both playing an important role. The first one, Phantom Curse, is also available at Turn 1 with a 5 turn cooldown and imperils all of the featured elements in his kit by 120% for an effective 4 turns. The same goes for the AoE 70% DEF/SPR break, which is handy alongside breakers such as Machina. Due to the cooldown, both do not have a 100% uptime and miss out on a single turn, which can either be ignored or patched up easily by another unit. It also decreases his own base DEF by 100%, which does hit him pretty hard but since most teams rock stat break immunity it'll be negated.

Gates of Hell is available at Turn 3 and while not offering the most damage due to being a 7500% non-elemental chain, it does grant him a 3 turn 250% MAG buff, which is a hefty boost and can be maintained 100% of the time.

His Limit Burst would be a lot better if it dealt elemental damage. It has a 150% LB damage buff before the damage goes out, a triple 120% imperil and a 350 MP recover... but! It deals non-elemental damage.
Unfortunately Mystina doesn't have the LB damage buff because hers DOES deal elemental damage.
    Top unit design?

How does he fare in the meta?
In terms of damage he goes in second place and has pretty much the perfect spot there. His bulk and damage are almost on the same level as Draconian Princess Fina but has none of the extra utility that she has. While it isn't a lot, this basically means he has no way of surpassing her by any means.

That is the case unless you're facing a human, fairy or reaper type monster. Which aren't uncommon by any means. For a general rating that won't do the trick though as DP Fina also has good killers in her arsenal with a 100% innate beast and undead killer. So no #1 for Lezard Valeth.

And while Dark Spirit Sol has a bulk advantage over him, both don't have any supportive niche and have somewhat similar bulk. And against humans and demons, Sol would be better due to having huge killers against those types with an innate killer and a 150% killer buff.

Since his general damage is higher by 10%, I will rank him at #2, but keep in mind that DS Sol also has a quite present niche.

His TMR is a worse robe in every way compared to the free robe you can get and only has a real use on himself. Even other TMR robes, such as Sol's, is better than his. So outside of using Lezard Valeth, it is an outdated TMR.
The STMR though is a really sweet one and is appreciated by himself and any MTDH mage as it has a high MAG stat AND 50% MTDH, easing up on materia slots and therefore allows easier access to bulk or killers. And in his case even more MAG through better robes.

    Mystina:
    [IMG]5*
    [IMG]6*
    [IMG]7*

TMR: Infinity Rod (Rod) - 140 MAG, -20% MP usage (Mystina only)

STMR: Gifted Sorceress' Knowledge (Materia) - 80% MAG, 80% Fire / Wind / Dark Resistance

    Overview:
Did you read through Lezard Valeth's review? Wanna read through it again?

Let me narrow it down for you: Almost the exact same base stats. Almost the exact same passives with 40% less MAG, 10% less HP, 20% less DEF and SPR as well as missing status ailment resistances and 50% less dark resistance in exchange for 30% wind resistance.

Mystina can also T-cast all abilities and has some actually good support skills with AoE 80% fire, wind or dark resistance buffs and an AoE 20% magic mitigation buff. I'd argue that the resistance buffs are more valuable but even then, depending on the team, these abilities might not come into play that much.

Last time we had Fire, Lightning and Dark. This time, you'll be surprised. We have Fire, Dark and... Wind! They all belong to the chaos wave awakened chain as well, so for DV or for basically any clears, Mystina is a perfect chaining partner for Lezard Valeth, which is good in the sense that if you didn't manage to pull two Lezard Valeths or want his STMR instead, you can still use her alongside him. Or a friend.
Her modifiers are slightly lower than his and vary from 4900% to 5500% due to not having a perfect uptime on her modifier boosts.

Mystina also has similar CD abilities.
Phantom Breath is the equivalent of Phantom Curse and instead imperils wind. Instead of breaking DEF/SPR, it buffs ATK/MAG by 180%, which is okay since both Lezard and Mystina do not have higher buffs for the first 2 turns.

And Gates of Heaven is quite the same as Gate to Hell just a lower modifier and a slight modifier increase.

Her Limit Burst would be good but Mystina lacks any kind of LB damage buffs and even with an outside 50% damage buff it wouldn't be amazing. Which is sad since they could've taken Lezard Valeth's LB damage buff and transfer it to her instead.

How does she fare in the meta?
Well... except for having slightly better support and wind element instead of lightning, she is a worse version of Lezard Valeth. And a lazily copied version of a copy paste mage unit on top of that.

It's one thing to have a copy paste unit scheme for every damage dealer, but on the same banner?

Now, her damage isn't bad and her best use ironically is alongside Lezard Valeth, especially for those who did pull and ended up with her instead of him. You won't lose out on a lot of damage with a friend Lezard.
The main differences are the lack of status ailment protection and the lack of the triple killers.

Other than that, her overall damage is lower by a good chunk and falls behind DS Sol by a good margin.

Her TMR is a way worse rod than the two free ones we got, so it fits the criteria of a worse version of Lezard Valeth once again.
The most redeeming part about her is her STMR. 80% MAG with no restrictions is nice, 80% fire, wind and dark resistance on top of that is even nicer. You can slap this STMR on any mage you want and gain a lot of MAG out of it as it is one of the highest MAG materias in the game. And bonus stats if you're facing wind, fire or dark bosses.

    Conclusion:
In my opinion, this banner is very disappointing.
Not only an extremely boring banner for a popular game such as Valkyrie Profile, you have basically the same unit TWICE. I know most double banners have one unit that's arguably worse to make it harder to pull the good unit, but for the most part you are pulling a weaker version of the strong unit.
And even the strong unit, Lezard Valeth, isn't a game changer as both DS Sol and DP Fina are on a similar level and can beat him many times as well. The real advantage is the additional element and his 3 killers.
Both mages you have are strong but easily skippable and I do not agree with the spam of low effort damage dealers that have no unique traits and, just to pronounce it even more, the MASSIVE spam of those units.

My apologies for the negative energy on this one, but honestly I've put the review off until today simply because of how boring it is to review these banners.
I want units like Paladin Cecil, Awakened Warrior of Light who are unique, fun to review and who stand out from the other options.
Back then we obviously had a lot of bland damage dealers, too, but the difference is we got a lot more other units in between and we mostly had single or double banners.
Nowadays we have triple to quadruple banners filled with mostly damage dealers.

    Thanks for the review!

I thought his kit was bland too but I like it. High damage, 3 elements, no need to use a bunch of cooldowns to unlock multi-cast and 3 useful killers. I just wish they put an end to this CW/CWA family and start a new one that actually chains properly. And fix the damn mechanic where the mages stop attacking once the enemy dies and mess up my DV score ::rudecat15::.

    Thank you! Excellent as always.

I actually pulled on this one, both because I liked VP and because I was hoping for Mystina. Odd, I know, but the recent DV event really drove home to me that I'm really weak on certain elements and damage types. Wind and Thunder magic are two of them.

Thanks Meme! Also, now that DV is a thing, can you offer a bit of a blurb on a unit's usefulness there too? I'm anticipating units coming that aren't necessarily meta for trials but could be for DV and vice versa. Things that would make a difference in DV would be active killer buffs, big turn 1, 2 or 3 burst capability, etc.

I agree... especially since I spent lapis first and did the math later. "damn, DV magic stages crushed me. Oh look, a mage banner, I'm in!" Oops. :(

I spent a single ticket on it and got my Lezard Valeth. The character is cool with all his animations, sick mods and triple killers but since CWA hardly chains I can't do anything much.

I find Gumi advertising a double banner shared by two CWA chainers without fixing it quite shameless even by Gumi standards.

Sadly, all correct. Personally, a collector of limited units if I can (other units will hopefully drop as off-banners eventually, right, Xon please? ::rudecat1:: ), but ... back in my mind, I cannot even justify spending 5k on a guaranteed rainbow pull. Esp with news like NV coming out. I might as well stretch the lapis.

    Disclaimers though ...
    • Completed that bloody Moon finally (no more true need of mages),
    • have XWQL (no need of mages for DV),
    • have hybrids to chain with XWQL ::blackmage::
    • pulled with some tickets, did get, surprise surprise one LV (plus one Vivi, and 5th Beryl) ::rudecat3::
But, that's it. Once I had gotten two more Dragon-Killer armour (only with 4* tickets), the appeal of this banner disappeared. If I am Gumi, I would actually discreetly put these units into the EX pool next week still, just to dilute it further. It's how bad i feel it is.

DISCLAIMER - I max-damaged for stage 1-2 and 3-3 with multiple enemies only. No time to experiment later because I was clearing Scorns instead, ha. ::kefka::

maybe you have already read all of the hints. The only special one I remembered, is to adjust your 2nd/3rd XWQL's ability to a ST one, depending on if the enemy is already dead or not. XWQL is just too strong. Because of the game's AoE mechanism, if the enemy is dead, AoE skills wont trigger. So, adjust accordingly.

Actually, for your info...these two are the earliest MC (or CWA) mages in jp... So I think both lezard and mystina, despite being basic, are the prototypes of mages
And most importantly all global or JP mages that have basic as hell skillset...should be the carbon copy of lezard and mystina..
