Oooh, exciting, our first CG unit out of an actual final fantasy! And as Lightning introduced the 6* meta, she now introduces the CG Protagonist era!
Many are hyped and I'm especially happy for our beloved Lady Hero as she's been waiting for this banner for ages and on top of it these units received a buff, too!
Will you pull? Let's decide together!

Question: Do you want me to include full door pots soon or not? The way I see it (especially right now) many will scatter their pots across different units and they are more luxury.

    Radiant Lightning:
    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

TMR: Dual Form (Materia) - Increase equipment ATK (100%) when dual wielding
STMR: Zantetsuken (Sword) - 169 ATK, 30% LB Damage, 50% TDW

    Overview:
Second try, Lightning, don't mess it up this time!

Lightning starts off with really good base stats in every area. With her own TMR her passives are also quite good with 60% HP, 40% MP, 50% DEF/SPR as well as 60% ATK (160% with gun + sword) and 150% TDW. She also receives the 600% chain cap instead of 400%. Through the TDW IW enhancements and options such as Storm Kickers, Lightning can get a lot of bulk if you want her to. Additionally she comes with a permanent 10% damage mitigation and 30% physical evasion. Odin's esper stats are boosted by 50% on herself.
She's resistant against blind, paralyze and confusion which often means you'll have to gear her towards status resistsances.

CG Protagonists have a very unique ability that always fills up their LB fully at the start of the fight, which makes her rotation very reliable.

As always, Lightning has many abilities that are too niche to be mentioned, but in this case some are niche and worth mentioning, thus I'll briefly add why they can be used occasionally:
Flourish of Steel, Seismic Strike, Crushing Blow+ (Bolting Strike frames), Skyward (Aureole Ray frames), Stormblade, Lightning Strike.
Thunderfall+ can be used for AoE chaining and if you are in need of an imbue, Razor Gale can be used to imperil thunder by 120% if the enemy has to be dispelled or self-dispelled the LB imperil.

If you need a healer, Curaga and Full-Life are still meta, make her your healer.
Also don't take that advice seriously, Full-Life is a neat addition.

Emergency breaks are quite common nowadays, oftenly enough they aren't all that strong. Lightning on the other hand can have more than suitable emergency breaks. They all have pitiful elemental modifiers but a 4 turn 60% ATK, MAG, DEF or SPR break. You can W-Cast them thus always ensuring to get them. On the following turn they will also break their respective counterpart by 60% for 3 turns. If you don't need an e.g. ATK break on a certain turn, you can use her MAG break and the turn afterwards you'll automatically break their ATK.
After Paradigm Shift: Ravager, one of her CD abilities, these breaks go up to 70%.

Now her fun part begins where most of the abilities are CD abilities. Paradigm Shift: Raver, available at Turn 1 with a 2 turn cooldown is yet another emergency break. To be precise: An AoE 1 turn 60% fullbreak that also increases her own LB fillrate by 300%. For an emergency break it does what it's designed to.

Two of her most important abilities are Defying Destiny and Paradigm Shift: Commando.
Both are available at Turn 1 with a 10 turn cooldown with the same goal: increasing your damage by a lot.
Defying Destiny grants her ATK break immunity for 10 turns, 50 MP / turn and boosts the modifier of various abilities, most notably Relentless Assault by 100%.
Paradigm Shift: Commando increases her own ATK by 250% for 11 turns and also boosts the modifiers of the same abilities by 150%.
Both modifier boosts can't be dispelled.
With her W-Cast you can use both on turn 1 but due to their high cooldown you should ensure that Lightning won't die shortly after their usage, otherwise you'll have a huge decrease in damage.

Army of One, which is available at Turn 3, is an AoE Aureole Ray chain with an effective 1600% modifier, fully fills her own LB and increases its damage by 50% afterwards.

The Limit Burst is yet another way to increase other abilities' parameters. It doesn't deal bad damage at all despite being a TDW unit. It has an effective 2170% modifier at max level that can chain and also imperils lightning by 120% for 5 turns! Well.. it also increases the modifiers of Army of One and Relentless Assault by 300%.

But... what is Relentless Assault? We haven't mentioned it yet.
It's her highest damaging ability by far. It has a measly 600% modifier in its vanilla state, but... there have been many mentions of modifier boosts.
Well... her own passives add 75% modifiers to it, her LB 300%, both of her CD abilities combined 250% and even Relentless Assault itself another 100%.
The combination of all these modifier boosts makes it end up at a really strong 3500% modifier. Lightning starts to deal a ton of damage on Turn 3 onwards unless she dies, though that can be said about many units nowadays.

How does she fare in the meta?
    Lightning
through her GL buffs manages to pull ahead beyond Zeno of the Beta Star! By 10%~12% she takes the crown of highest chain damage in GL right now and with the proper gear can be turned into a really bulky attacker.

The combination of massive modifier boosts, TDW and 6x chain cap makes her a very strong chainer while having access to emergency breaks as well as other chaining families such as Bolting Strike and AT if there are stronger units in the future. Since Lightning will always W-Cast for the highest damage, I'd suggest to put the higher ATK weapon in the left hand.

Damage wise as of right now she even pulls ahead slightly compared to Light Warrior Bartz, who will be our next CG Protagonist. Though these are average numbers, a GL buff to his damage should be considered an option that might take place as he's right in between Lightning and Zeno.

Since she is a TDW unit, she can easily swap to a different element as long as you have the external imperils for it, which is an advantage many TDH units can't take as easily.

If you've yet to pull for a strong physical chainer, this is another opportunity to get one, but keep in mind that we are going to see more and more chainers in the upcoming banners and you might want to wait, but I'll elaborate more on that in the conclusion.

    Build + Maths:
    Longinus (FFBE) (190 ATK)
    Sparky (120 ATK, Lightning)
    Power Amplifier (40 ATK, 30% ATK, 25 DEF/SPR)
    Catastrophic Vest (30 ATK/SPR, 50 DEF, 15% HP)
    Colorful Lei x2 (90 ATK, 20% TDW)
    Dual Form (100% TDW) + 30% ATK/DEF/MAG/SPR
War Goddess' Insignia (30% ATK, 30% LB Damage)
    Electrifying Might (80% ATK)
Past Regrets (60% ATK, -10% SPR)

    Stats with Odin 3*:
    9287 HP
    531 MP
    2557 ATK
    522 DEF
    436 SPR

    Rotation:

Turn 1: Defying Destiny + Paradigm Shift: Commando
    Turn 2: Limit Burst
    Turn 3: Relentless Assault x2
    Turn 4: Relentless Assault x2
Turn 5: Army of One + Relentless Assault
    Turn 6: Limit Burst
    Turn 7: Relentless Assault x2
    Turn 8: Relentless Assault x2
    Turn 9: Relentless Assault x2
Turn 10: Army of One + Relentless Assault

    Turn 1: 0
    Turn 2: 3112^2 x 28.21 x 4.75 x 1.6 = 2076327495
    Turn 3: [ 3112^2 x 31 x 4.9285 + 3112^2 x 35 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 7729464090
    Turn 4: [ 3112^2 x 35 x 4.9285 + 3112^2 x 35 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 8149490511
    Turn 5: [ 3112^2 x 25 x 5.5 + 3112^2 x 35 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 7403833888
    Turn 6: 3112^2 x 39.06 x 4.75 x 2.2 = 3953008116
    Turn 7: [ 3112^2 x 35 x 4.9285 + 3112^2 x 35 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 8149490511
    Turn 8: [ 3112^2 x 35 x 4.9285 + 3112^2 x 35 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 8149490511
    Turn 9: [ 3112^2 x 35 x 4.9285 + 3112^2 x 35 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 8149490511
    Turn 10: [ 3112^2 x 19 x 5.5 + 3112^2 x 23 x 6 ] x 2.2 = 5166704224

    Average Turn 1-10: 5,892,729,985
    -> 170% of Yuffie's damage ( 3,478,364,670 )
    -> 142% of Esther's damage ( 4,145,746,483 )
    -> 138% of Regina's damage with 50% imperil ( 4,260,956,857 )
    -> 117% of Elena's damage ( 5,039,010,533 )
    -> 103% of Zeno's damage ( 5,696,282,500 )

Disclaimer: Lightning's numbers are slightly higher as my chain mod calcs are slightly off. On top of it the weapon ATK benefits her more than others, which all in one leads her to get around ~112% of Zeno's damage instead.

    Neverending Hope:
    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

TMR: Survival Knife (FFXIII) (Dagger) - 18 ATK, 117 MAG, 105 SPR
STMR: Shining Guardian of Hope (Materia) - 30% MP, 50% MAG, 100% Light resistance

    Overview:
The one who always cursed your golden pulls back in the day when 4* units mattered. You remember him and as much as we hated him, he's now back with an upgraded version! Perhaps that's why he's called... neverending?

Hope's basestats for a support are fine. They indicate more towards a mage build but that's not what he'll be used for and as a support it's easy to gain more than enough defensive stats nowadays, thus his low HP base stat isn't hindering him from anything. His passives are pretty generic for a 7* support with 50% HP, 80% MP and 50% DEF/SPR as well as 120% MAG. He receives 50% more stats from Alexander, though Alexander doesn't really offer too much that Hope can utilise.
He is resistant against confusion and stop, thus it's highly recommended to gear him with any ribbon effect.

Hope has innate Dualcast for all of his spells as well as W-Cast for all of his abilities, so keep that in mind as we go on.

Let's talk about his spells first. They are pretty unique overall. He starts with the same Bar-Ga spells as Yuna with Barthundaga, -firaga, -blizzaga and -waterga. This makes for a decent base against many ele tetris trials.
His two other spells make him really unique though. Veil grants one ally a full ribbon for 5 turns. If you don't want your damage dealer to wear a ribbon, you can always cast this spell. Unfortunately it's locked to one target.
Enthunder is a ST 3 turn thunder imbue, so you can actually imbue two allies in the same turn, which can be a big deal for some units such as Regina.

If a boss isn't too demanding on damage or you need emergency breaks, Hope can work decently well. His breaks are tied to his AoE buffs and luckily in a smart way, too. For example, a 5 turn AoE 60% DEF break will buff your party's ATK by 130%. If you break MAG you will buff SPR. In the meta 130% buffs don't live up quite as well and thus it's recommended to ensure your units have a certain level of bulk adjusted to the trial.

Another option would be to use his ST 3 turn 150% ATK/MAG or DEF/SPR buffs. Most damage dealers have their own offensive buffs so often enough they can be skipped, thus you'd mostly have to focus on the DEF/SPR buffs. Since supports and healers often are bulky enough, your tanks and damage dealers would need them the most.

He comes with some okay-ish on-demand mitigations, too. 30% generic and 20% magic, which isn't really hot. His 30% mitigation also has an AoE 1000 HP barrier.

Focusing more on his greenmage aspects, Flowing Fortress is an AoE 100% light and dark resistance buff that also grants stop immunity to your party, which makes Hope cover every element but two! Wind and Earth are uncovered. You could give him Golem, Titan or Tetra with their respective Bar-ga spell to cover one out of these two.

Additionally if you are in need for support chaining, Hope has a non-elemental and occasionally light elemental AT chain as well as Quake frames, which aren't as important.

Last Resort is the occasional light AT chain I meant. It's available at Turn 1 with a 5 Turn cooldown and breaks SPR by 74% for 1 turn, buffs his own MAG by 250% for 1 turn and has an effective 4000% modifier. The only real use for this is its 74% SPR break.

Hope's Defying Destiny is also available at Turn 1 with a 7 Turn cooldown and buffs all stats by 180% for 4 turns. This buff can't be dispelled. He also buffs generic mitigation by 40% for 4 turns.

Lastly his LB is a 1 turn 100% imperil to ALL elements, deals some weird hexa-elemental damage that most likely won't do much and also recovers 200 flat MP to your entire party. While this imperil doesn't last super long and is locked behind a 27 cryst LB, the 2 turns might just be enough for units like Regina or even Cid (with the newest TDW builds for whales perhaps).

How does he fare in the meta?
He's not the hottest unit out there. And I don't mean his sprite, I mean his kit.

The thing about Hope is: he takes up the same slot as Sylvie essentially as a jack-of-all-trades kind of unit. He buffs 6 elemental resistances innately by 70% ~ 100% , has a lightning imbue and a 100% all imperil with occasionally very high buffs and high mitigation, but the latter doesn't have a 100% uptime, making it harder for him to fit into generic teams.

Some teams such as Regina users that also have units like Charlotte and Sieghard in there can make use of him quite well. Charlotte and Sieghard can provide huge mitigations after Hope's mitigations wear out while Charlotte also provides 30% magic mitigation. Hope can then focus on the 150% DEF/SPR buffs on single units, imbue Regina or perhaps Cid, imperil or buff elemental resistances and sometimes throw in an AoE Dispel + HP barrier.

As I said earlier, if the trial is generally easier than others you can even use him as your breaker, but that won't be too common.

He can also fit into team comps that manage to clear trials within the first 4 turns quite well due to his instant access to 180% buffs that can't be dispelled alongside imbue utility and good elemental resistances.

He can't manage to pull ahead of the more traditional supports like MS Nichol and Yuraisha and even S.Nichol due to his jack-of-all-trades kit whereas the traditional supports fit into pretty much every team and now that the ele tetris trials are pretty much over Sylvie will see a similar future where traditional supports like MS Nichol and Yuraisha start to pull ahead again. On top of that, MS Nichol just received major buffs, most notably an occasional 50% Mitigation buff in form of a CD that can be used on Turn 1!

Protector of Lapis (20% HP, 40% SPR, 2 Auto LB)

    Stats with Carbuncle 3*:
    15171 HP
    878 MP
    985 MAG
    732 DEF
    1021 SPR

    Conclusion:
If you aren't into FFXIII and you already own Esther, Zeno, Elena or even Regina, you can feel free to skip and wave the new Lightning a goodbye. Perhaps some tears can be shed if you love Lady Hero's comics.
Radiant Lightning takes the #1 spot but I do think that future chainers are a better investment. This is more so due to the banner having Hope, which for some can be a very fun and good unit even. He isn't troll, just many team compositions can't utilise him too well and thus he falls into a niche spot where is appears to be troll for many. Which I can't blame them for. He definitely is not a generic unit and this sadly hurts the banner.
Lightning will remain strong for a longer time as she has high damage output and through TDW access to quite a lot of bulk if you have the IW enhancements. She can chain with a few future units too and her Bolting Strike chains aren't that weak either.
Hope will not have the same future and will start to fall off after the last ele tetris bosses for many.
Overall if it's not for Lightning or her TMRs, you don't have to feel obliged to pull. But it's also not a wasted investment, more or less a banner of your choice. Sadly you can't choose your RNG.

So I know GL is a different game and all and Esther broke the meta but I tried looking at JP's top damage dealers to see who to hoard for next and the future doesn't look especially more powerful. Bartz was supposed to be the "next guy up" but with RL's buffs he's actually behind her if they don't buff him too. Then it looks like CG Spoiler was the next big thing but his numbers didn't appear to be a huge step up from Bartz (and his kit honestly looks a lot like Esther 2.0). So if nothing changes and we skip RL, who is the distant horizon DPS unit we should be hoarding for?

    1) Sylvie will be less useful now? But she's best girl... ::cry:: (honestly didn't expect I'd end up clearing these elemental tetris trials until like CG Rain)
    2) Have you ever considered streaming to Twitch?

No one, in the JP side a lot of people is still using CG Bartz, we need to hoard for tanks and healers

The one big niche Hope has going for him right now is that his elemental resist covers are VERY ideal for Warden Welter.

I mean, come on. Light, Dark AND Water resist? With two of three elements at 100%?

Yeah, she's done. She's very done.

If I understand right, CG Lightning doesn't worth for Zeno's user (and CG Bartz too).

What is the next biggest DPS?
