Help understanding

    Hey guys, I've started playing the game a while back, already reached 6* with several units, but I can't even kill the most basic of challenges, I figure that's becsbec I don't understand most of the game mechanics, so I would appreciate any guides or help threads about all the mechanics that supply damage, like chain finishers, magic finishers, party compositions and more, thanks in advance to everyone

    A basic breakdown:
    Chaining Basics:
    You'll want to start finding chaining abilities from your units for maximum damage...
    When a unit uses an ability that hits multiple times, the time gap between each hit is different. For instance when I use Tidus' Quick Hit it hits first after 22 "frames" then hits again 5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5 and 20 frames apart. If I use a 2nd Tidus with the same move (Quick Hit) it will do exactly the same:

    1st Tidus: 22,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,20
    2nd Tidus: 22,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,20

    We can see that the 2 will chain perfectly.

    If we use an example like Tidus' Quick Hit with Orlandeau's Divine Ruination:

    Tidus: 22,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,20
    Orlandeau: 70,7,5,7,7,7,7

    The numbers are different, so they will not chain properly; the chains will break. When they break we lose a lot of damage. Abilities that chain together are labelled as "families". Orlandeau's Divine Ruination has a large family of chaining partners, including Fryevia's newly enhanced Frost Flower Blitz:

    Orlandeau: 70,7,5,7,7,7,7
    Fryevia: 70,7,5,7,7,7,7

    Finishing (capping) a chain is a another mechanic carried out either by a specialist finisher or using a summoner to evoke an esper (usually Bahamut) with boosted stats for a massive hit that has been affected by the chain modifier. This is simply done by activating the ability (or summoning the esper) at the appropriate time so the abilitly hits close ot the end of the chain. Some units can even cap their own chains!

    In the current meta the generally accepted team composition is something like:
    Breaker - lowers enemy stats (where possible) so they do less damage to you/take more damage from you
    Buffer - boosts your team stats so you take less damage and deal more damage
    Tank - covers AoE attacks against your team/provokes ST attacks so your squishy units stay alive
    Healer - restores any HP lost, and (more importantly?) revives those who have fallen
    DPS - preferably a chaining (multi-hit move) unit
    DPS - companion unit whose chain matches your own

    Watch some Youtube guides too. Ones by @Evillaughter01 & Sinzar especially. They have "budget guides" and walk you through trials step-by-step. That way, you can understand the mechanics of each individual boss and plan accordingly.
