    GUESS WHO’S NOT DEAD!? …Yeah, well. Want to take this one out of the batch before I lose it. So, a dragon unit… No, not Dragoon. That’s a completely different one.

    Let’s get a better look at our soon-to-be-forgotten dragon, Barusa, whose game will be going out of service soon. Never got to play the game, though, so I can’t say much aside from IT’S A FREAKING CUTE DRAGON!

    One of the heroes from another world blessed by Khalam, the deity worshipped by the people of Olthea. Princess Claire offered asylum to Barusa after he was banished by his people, and thus came to live with her in the palace. However, he was unable to help the princess when she was abducted, causing him to grow ashamed of his own cowardice. It was at that moment that Khalam would bless him.

    Before enhancements

    Barusa was aight. A good cover tank for beginners, since he was "free", and had very good abilities overall. Much like any other physical cover tank, he has a lot of HP and DEF, and an added resistance to paralyze and confuse, which comes much in handy for a tank such as himself.

    There was a little issue, however, when Barusa hit GL… And that was WoL and EV. WoL was EVERYONE’S favorite physical AoE tank due to his breaks and side support, and EV was a really strong provoke and counter 4[​IMG], which came much in handy due to his GE upgrade. Not only that, Charlotte was also in the group, with her MP recovery and possible death save that allowed her to survive a nuke.

    Barusa had a really good kit, though. Being able to mitigate physical or magic damage to an ally while boosting their DEF or SPR respectively comes much in handy, and even now it’s appreciated. After all, it does stack multiplicatively with regular damage mitigation, such as 9S or Rikku. However, the stat boost was only 80%, and we already had eSoleil and Lunera at the time, meaning that 80% was pretty much… Meh.

    After enhancements

    Believe it or not, it’s now being debated whether or not Barusa is the best F2P tank. Not because any of his passives got enhanced, no. Both his Force Field moves plus his cover and provoke move got enhanced. And BOY do they make him resilient. When stacking the damage mitigation, he reduces the damage by ~ 87%! And, get this, that’s without breaks. He easily absorbs damage like no one’s business, I’m telling you.

    His stat buffs go from 80% to 120%, which is the same as eSoleil when using her defensive or offensive dances. Keep in mind, though, that, while ST, it’s INSTANT. No need for a rotation like Soleil.

    So, we basically got an “AoE + Provoke with a TON of mitigation” tank. Lacking WoL’s breaks, lacking EV’s counter opportunities, lacking Charlotte’s nuke-avoiding hit, but granting a TON of mitigation and Provoke to complement his AoE cover. It’s just beautiful.

    Cons

    Damaging LB – Barusa’s LB only does 1 thing: Damage. And it’s not even good damage. He does have a decent enough move -Primeval Howl- that does damage scaled on his DEF, which is what you’ll be building him for. But his LB or his other move -Trample- do little to no damage, and have an ok-ish imperil. Right now, we’ve got eAileen dealing 75% earth imperil, eAce with 75% fire imperil, and, added to that, Barusa won’t have time to use those moves in a real battle. You want him to keep a rotation surrounded by his AoE cover, Provoke and DEF + Physical mitigation going, and that leaves no space for him to do anything else. Not even for LB, too, since it does nothing other than damage and imperil.

    ST buffs – I won’t deny that Barusa has got good buffs in his kit. But Embolden is just completely outdated in the current meta, and his strongest buffs are unfortunately ST. I understand if they were AoE, they’d be insanely broken, 5* base level buffs. However, not everything is lost, since what you want to use those buffs for is for himself. So, while a minor con, still worth mentioning.

    Useless Killer – Dragon Killer in a Tank’s kit… Really? We had Warrior of Light with his Undead Killer, and that hasn’t given him much more damage anyway. Same for Charlotte, who has 2 KILLERS. WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST ON GIVING THESE TANKS DAMAGE KILLERS?! The only thing they do is take a spot of a possibly good passive.

    Trust Master Reward
    Cowered Courage (Materia): Increase DEF by 30%, increase earth resistance by 30%, enables Primal Instinct
    Primal Instinct – Mitigate physical damage taken (30%) for 3 turns to all allies. Cost – 50 MP

    Yes, yes, yes, YES! It’s basically a free TMR, and a REALLY GOOD ONE. If you didn’t get Pod 153, I HIGHLY suggest getting this one. A great DEF boost, a niche earth resistance, and an insanely good move.


    Arena – Barusa only has his ST buffs and mitigation, so he’s useless in Arena. WoL is used more often, and even then you’ve got a hard time seeing him in Arena. So, not needed.


    Comparison

    • Barusa has a total of 50% HP/DEF increase when equipped with any kind of shield, while WoL has 30% DEF and 20% HP
    • WoL’s base HP is higher than Barusa, and can be potted higher
    • WoL’s AoE cover has a slightly higher chance of proccing than Barusa’s AoE cover, but varies in damage mitigation
    • WoL can cover for an ally if he hasn’t used his cover yet, while Barusa can’t protect anyone without his AoE cover active
    • WoL has 45% breaks for all stats, divided in ATK/MAG and DEF/SPR
    • Barusa has ST 120% DEF or SPR buffs and also mitigation for physical or magic respectively, while WoL has 74% DEF buff locked behind his LB, and it HAS to be a maxed LB
    • WoL has Raise, meaning he can help your healer in case they can’t Raise an ally
    • WoL can counter magic attacks 30% of the time with a 25% HP/MP heal for himself, meaning he can sustain himself easier, if only a little bit
    WoL’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 7421988 (12,516 HP * 593 DEF)
    Barusa’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 9269568 (12,768 * 726 DEF)


    I’m not too fond on comparing tanks, since I usually believe it’s up for situations. WoL is great for those who need to reduce parameters of an enemy, some support for their healer, and cover. Barusa is good for those who want a solid tank who can take damage like no one’s business, and keep carrying on.

    HOWEVER, if you use someone else as your breaker, then Barusa wins. If not, it’s up to you whether you pick Barusa or WoL

    • Barusa has higher passives than Charlotte when equipped with any shield
    • Charlotte has a chance of ignoring a possible nuke 1 time per turn
    • Charlotte has Auto-Regen, meaning she can sustain herself reliably
    • Barusa’s AoE cover will proc more often than Charlotte, and will mitigate more damage
    • Charlotte can support your team with MP recovery
    • When LB is maxed, Charlotte can buff the entire team’s DEF by 100% while healing a respectable amount of HP
    • Barusa has ST 120% DEF or SPR buffs and also mitigation for physical or magic respectively
    • Charlotte can protect an ally whenever her cover is not active, and mitigates a LOT of damage when doing so
    • When equipped with Patriot, Charlotte has access to an Esunaga-like ability, while Barusa can remove all ailments only from himself, and not AoE-wise
    Charlotte’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 7170030 (12,579 HP * 570 DEF)
    Barusa’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 9269568 (12,768 * 726 DEF)


    This one might be biased, but I think Charlotte is better than Barusa here. No, not because she’s able to recover MP to your party. Rather, it’s the fact that she’ll jump immediately in front of someone whenever her cover’s not active, and can even survive a hit that would otherwise kill her. She’s also able to sustain herself HP-wise, meaning that, even if a healer can’t heal her full HP, Charlotte will still have a lot of HP to continue. Her LB is also more useful since it boosts DEF by 50% (100% is fully maxed) while recovering HP, and it’s rather cheap at 16 LB Crystals.
    So I think Charlotte wins here purely based on use. If we’re going to count eHP, however, Barusa wins.

    • EV has 100% break resistance for all stats
    • Barusa has better passives when equipped with any shield
    • EV can give everyone 100% earth resistance
    • EV absorbs earth damage and turns it into HP
    • Barusa’s AoE cover will proc more often and mitigates more damage
    • Barusa’s Provoke will rarely get him killed compared to EV’s Provoke
    • EV can counter physical hits
    • EV’s LB grants damage mitigation of 54% when maxed, at a decent cost of 16 LB Crystals
    • Barusa has ST 120% DEF or SPR buffs and also mitigation for physical or magic respectively
    EV’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 7952740 (12,524 HP * 635 DEF)
    Barusa’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 9269568 (12,768 * 726 DEF)


    Again, in personal use, EV wins. He can give your team break resistance, which synergizes well with our beloved eEmperor’s Control. He also counters and fares well against earth damage-dealing enemies, ‘cause he says “Screw your damage!” right in their face. However, when it comes to how much damage he can absorb outside those situations…
    Outside of a battle where the enemy deals earth-elemental damage, Barusa wins. Inside a battle where an enemy deals earth-elemental attacks, EV wins.

    • Barusa has higher passives when equipped with any shield
    • Both have Draw Attacks
    • Ozetta can restore HP when guarding
    • Ozetta can set up a 3-turn Regen for all allies
    • Ozetta can protect a chosen ally for 2 turns AT ALL TIMES
    • When enhanced, Barusa’s Provoke is better than Ozetta’s
    • Barusa has ST 120% DEF or SPR buffs and also mitigation for physical or magic respectively
    • Ozetta can boost all allies’ SPR by 104% for 3 turns, and cast 49% mitigation for 1 turn via her LB (when maxed), at the cost of 20 LB Crystals
    Ozetta’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 7725410 (12,166 HP * 635 DEF)
    Barusa’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 9269568 (12,768 * 726 DEF)


    Is there any comparison here? Barusa just destroys Ozetta. Barusa can both protect everyone from physical damage AND draw any attack that could be directed at others. Not only that, but he can also add mitigation to himself on demand to just stack on top of his Provoke mitigation.
    So, yeah. Barusa wins here.

    • Barusa has more HP passives than Cagnazzo, while Cagnazzo has more SPR passives (which is odd)
    • Both have a Draw Attacks with Cagnazzo’s only being named differently
    • Cagnazzo has MP recovery of 3%
    • Cagnazzo’s Defensive Stance grants him 60% damage mitigation, which is double of Barusa’s enhanced Adventurer’s Guardian
    • Cagnazzo has 50% DEF/SPR buffs for all allies, while Barusa has ST 120% DEF or SPR, but with added physical or magic mitigation respectively
    • However, Cagnazzo does have DEF/SPR by 120% after a 2 turn setup for a move that is unlocked for 1 turn, but lasts 5 turns
    • Cagnazzo’s Defensive Stance LOCKS HIM for 2 turns after he uses it, which acts much like bards, meaning HE CAN’T DO ANYTHING during 2 turns.
    • Cagnazzo has an “Ignore Fatal Damage” passive, which allows him to survive an otherwise possible nuke
    Cagnazzo’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 7447216 (11,564 HP * 644 DEF)
    Barusa’s eHP w/ no 5* base equip + no esper = 9269568 (12,768 * 726 DEF)


    I’m skeptical about this one. Cagnazzo is already a good non-enhanced tank, but being locked for 2 turns means that he’s got nothing else to do in those dead turns. He’ll just keep going back inside his shell every 3 turns, basically.
    So, I gotta give this one to Barusa

    Conclusion

    Barusa became a strong, mighty dragon. I can see why people argue whether he became the best F2P tank out there, and, trust me, I don’t disagree.

    I HIGHLY suggest pulling for Barusa, since it’s going to be THE LAST CHANCE to get him. We will probably not have another King’s Knight Collab after the servers close, so, since you have the chance, PULL FOR HIM.

    And if you already have Basch, who is technically the best AoE cover tank, and/or MRamza or Wilhelm, I still think you should get him for his TMR. Gives your party physical damage mitigation, which is very appreciated, and gives a great DEF boost plus a nice earth resistance.

    So, yeah. GO GET THE LEGENDARY DRAGON!

    Nice one. Cagnazzo also has draw attack passive ,which ,even not in his tank stance, can draw some hits away XD, would be good to add that.

    Blue and purple text are very hard to see for anyone with the dark theme. Aside from that nice review, pretty much what I was thinking on him as far as comparisons to the other 3* and 4* base tanks.
