Update: Guide is completely changed to be based on TM and Non-TM Ranking.

    Mage Build
Mages are the ones who will hit hard and even exploit elemental weaknesses. They can even go as far as to giving out status ailments as well. For a damage-dealing unit, you would like to stack MAG %. If you want your mage to survive longer and take less damage, then feel free to stack HP% and/or Def %. SPR% and MP% is also beneficial for a bigger MP pool and to help them take less magic damage.

Weapons: Since mages want to deal damage, rods are the best way to go. The strongest rod as of now is the Omnirod with 91 MAG, a TMR from Arc. If you do not want to waste time getting it, then you can grab either the Wizard Rod from completing the Surging Menance Trial. However, if you want your mage to have more magic defense, then staffs will help. The strongest staff as of now is the Magi Staff, a TMR from Lenna. If you're unable to get the TMR, then the next best staff is the Golden Staff, which can be won from the Advanced B-4 Colisseum. You can also grab Mateus' Malice, Emperor's TM.

Armors & Hats: If you were around for the Halloween Event, the Creepy Mask is the strongest hat in term of MAG. Limited Halloween Unit, BLack Cat Lid, has a TM called Cat Hat which gives MAG, SPR, MP and DEF with an immunity to silence, the best hat for mages to take care of all needs. If you do not have either, then grab the Chapeau item from the Colisseum D-5.

As for armor, Cupid's Robe is very good as clothes, provided you participated in the Trials of Love event. The strongest Robe is the Rainbow Robe, with 45 across DEF, MAG and SPR with 30% element resistance to everything but Dark; mages best friend. Siren's RObe is also neat from the Beast of the Dark trial, which also give immunity to sleep and silence. If you cannot grab one of them for whatever reason, then aim for the Magi Robe, which can be won from Colisseum C-5.

Accessories: The Magistral Crest (TMR from Vanille), Earrings (Bought from the Fat Chocobo in the Town of Kolts), Hero's Ring (Recipe won by obtaining 30 trophies), Celestial Glove (TMR from Luneth), Magical Eggs, Candy Basket (From Halloween Event), Ice Rosetta (White Knight Noel's TM) and the Genji Glove (TMR from Gilgamesh) greatly contributes to a mage since they boost their MAG and can give other bonuses as well. I also recommend the Ring of Lucii for your best mage. Ring of Lucii gives:
    • Alterna - Magic damage (5.1x) with ignore SPR (25%) to all enemies. MP:99
    • Death - Instant KO (30%) and physical damage (0.8x) with HP drain (30%) to one enemy. MP:30
    • Holy - Chance to negate physical damage taken (25%) and counter physical attacks (25%) with light magic damage (1.2x) and recover MP (40) to self
    Top TM Mages
    #1: Ace:

With his enhancements, he can deal so much damage with Wild Card having the unique ability of taking advantage of killer abilities and elements on weapons. His LB also does the same.

TM: Acceptance is 30% with 20% MP. Please grab.

Arena: Restores party's mp, can evade attacks as many times as he want with Wild Card, and his Tri-Beam Laser hits everyone. A monster when his abilities are enhanced. Recommended to use.

    Pros:
    High MAG damage skills.
Recovers HP and MP through Life Hand and Spirit Hand.
Wild Card allows him to deal damage and negate physical attacks for 2 turns.
Wild Card works with Dual Wield, meaning this magic skill deals damage two times as though it is double cast.
Wild Card works with Killer passives and elements from weapons.
Great LB Gauge filler through Devotion.
    Can inflict Stop.
    Auto-Refresh.
Ability-based, which means silence will not hinder him.
Exclusive Materia, "Cut Cards" is better than Attack Hand.
Can recover own MP through Spirit Hand.
Tri-Force Laser when enhanced lowers enemy team's fire, ice, thunder and light resistance by 75%!

Cons: What comes out of the skills is random.
Triple Slip irrelevant because of Wild Card.
Only covers 1/4 of the elements with fire and thunder.
Skills will not work with Dualcast (Wild Card works with Dual Wield).

Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Lakshmi, Ifrit, Odin, Diabolos, Golem

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Elza, Maxwell, Orlandeau, Fryevia, Ling, Warrior of Light, Meliadoul, Orran, Zargabaath, Rikku, Delita, Ashe, Lunera, Bran, Agrias, Knight Delita, Sakura, Wilhelm, Cecil, Rain, Lasswell, Ilias, Rem, Reberta, Tilith, Minfilia, Marie, Exdeath, Emperor, Dark Fina, Seabreeze Dark Fina, Vargas, 9S, Veritas of the Flame, Orran, Meliadoul, 2B

    #2: Trance Terra
    [IMG]

This woman... beast... beastly woman, is one of the best mages you can have in-game. She carry 60% MAG and she can dual cast black magic, mainly her Ultima. She is also great for using Magical Activation to boost her MAG and SPR by 80% and also strengthening her Chaos Wave from 1.8 to 3.6 modifier, 10 hits instead of 5 and also making the MP cost down to 0!

TM: Soul of THamasa is a Dualcast with stats like Genji Glove is a Dual Wield with stats. This is actually great since it gives a lot of MP as well as DEF and SPR for mages and healers. It also mean an extra ability slot.

Pros: 60% MAG and 50% SPR from passives.
    Immune to silence.
Guardian Mog cures all of her ialments after a battle.
    Auto-Refresh.
    Can evade attacks (30% chance).
    Can dual cast black magic.
Magical Activation boosts her MAG and SPR and strengthens her Chaos Wave.
    Can use Full-Life.
Covers 1/2 of the elements (Fire, ice, thunder, light (Holy).
    Enhancements in the future.

Cons: Unable to dualcast her white magic spells; need to carry a Dualcast to do it.
No ga-versions of thunder and ice.
Maduin Guard is outbeat by other units' skills to boost element resistance such as CoD, Tilith and Marie.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Ling, Dark Fina, Dangerous Ariana, Emperor, Exdeath, Kefka, Terra, Y'shtola, Marie, Minfilia, Cerius, Seven, Hope, Cecil, Shantotto, Vanille, Aiden, 9S, Veritas of the Flame, Orran, Meliadoul, Ramza

    #3: Dark Fina
    [IMG]

As a mage, she is magnificent. She carries Dual Black Magic like Exdeath, but she also carries Ultima as a bonus. Dystopia increases damage with each consecutive use and if she is physically hit, she has a chance to counter with a magic move call Retaliate, hitting the whole enemy team. She also carries a Revoke passive to keep her immune to silence, paralyze and petrify as well as using Distress to inflict status ailments.

TM: Dark Bonds is great for mages since they usually use a rod and wear a robe mainly, giving them 50% MAG; not stackable.
Arena: Can inflict status ailments, deal chain damage with an enhanced Ultima and can counter with Retaliate while resistant to ailments which can hurt her. Top tier and recommended.

    Pros: Inflicts many status ailments.
Lowers ATK and DEF by 40%.
Immune to silence, petrify and paralyze.
    Auto-Refresh.
    Retaliate is a counter-attack magic.
    50% Dark resistance.
    Can steal MP through Osmose.

    Cons: Weak to holy.
High MP usage through Dual Black magic usage.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Ling, Rosa, Ariana, Cecil, Elza, Black Cat Lid, Ramza, Rain, Demon Rain, White Knight Noel, Lightning, Noctis, Mercedes, Seven, Delita, Primm, Vanille, Minfilia, Marie, Xon, Setzer, Seabreeze Dark Fina, Ashe, Warrior of Light, Zargabaath, Lunera, Ilias, Rasler, Tidus, Sakura, Ace, 9S, 2B, Orran, Meliadoul

    #4: Emperor
    [IMG]

BOW DOWN! The Emperor is very powerful and you should COUNT THE COST. He can knock his MAG by 100% of his base for 5 turns... in exchange for the team's SPR 20% for 3 turns. Be prepared if you're going against a magical enemy. His Fire from Below gets even powerful from 4-10 turns and he can also use Subdue to increase his own SPR by 60% while lowering the enemy by 40%. He can also Dualcast black magic!

Pros: "I'll Never Die": 10% MP Regen.
Insolent Fools: 75% less likely to be targeted.
    Dual Black Magic.
Fire from Below is STRONGEST magic in-game when built up.
Subdue strengthens his own SPR while weaken the enemy team's SPR.
    Time Stopper is good.
Can maintain his MP easier than the other mages.

    Cons:
Control is risky when going against magic enemies.
Fire from Below can take some time to actually hit max peak; cannot cast a different spell or die and will not work against enemies who resistant or completely null against fire.
    Present your Offering is Suicide.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Lightning, Olive, Noctis, Dark Fina, Ling, Marie, White Knight Noel, Yun, Exdeath, Bartz, Krile, Rain, Seven, Ariana, Ramza, Shantotto, Arc, Hope, Vanille, Minfilia, Soleil, Y'shtola, Lasswell, Dracu Lasswell, Fryevia, Aiden, Tilith, Luka, Rosa

    #4: Exdeath

He carries Trascender, allowing him to deal 30% more magic damage to birds, bugs, plants, beasts and even humans. This makes him even a force in PVP Arena. In addition, he is also able to dualcast and carry Meteor as well. His stats are also high in def and SPR for a mage, meaning he is a mank/mage-tank. His LB at 6* also is capable of inflicting 4 random status ailments, making him extremely useful. Please grab Letters & Arms, Ingus' TM, for Exdeath, since it means 50% MAG for him for using a sword.

Armor: For a mage who can tank, he is able to use shields and strong armor, but he cannot wear any robes. The Survivor's Helm (Won from Colisseum Advanced B-5) boosts his defense more and gives him elemental resistances. The Force Armor (Won from the Demon Chimera Trial) gives him def, more spr and also more resistances. You should also aim for Monster's Breastplate (Lawrence's TM), since it carry 12 MAG for Exdeath to have free reign with.

TM: Holy is not much used unless you want a specific mage to use the spell.

Pros: Transcender-Killer passive against 5 enemy types.
    Dual Black Cast magic.
LB can inflicts 4 status ailments!
    Auto-Regen and Osmose.
Since he can use swords, consider Letters & Arms, even multiples of them.

    Cons:
Unable to wear hats or robes, losing out on MAG.
Cannot doublecast magic skills like Wicked Light.
    MP-Heavy usage.
    Weak to Holy.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Rosa, Cecil, Bartz, Ramza, Tilith, Arc, Delita, Hope, Noctis, Ling,Dark Fina, Elza, Seven, Ariana, Vanille, Primm, Shantotto, Rydia, Kefka, Rain, Lightning, Marie, Olive, Minfilia, Aiden, Soleil, Santa Roselia

    #6: Terra

Terra is now ready to fight with her 6* power. With her Unlock Magic, she gets 50% more MAG and unlocks dualcast, Meteor and Chaos Wave as well. Her Lifesaver passive also give her 20% more MAG, with her passives, she gets 50% MAG to deal damage.

TM: If you want one of your mage to deal more damage, feel free to grab this, especially for those who can dualcast. Otherwise, it is an average TM.

Pros: Unlock Magic boosts her MAG and gives her Dualcast, Meteor and Chaos Wave.
    50% MAG from passives.
Can use Ray of Hope to cure everyone of status ailments.
Carry a Full-Life (With Unlock Magic giving her Dualcast, she can dualcast this spell easily).
Guardian Mog removes all status ailments on her after each battle.
    Lifesaver increases her LB gauge.
Since she can use swords, consider using Letters & Arms, especially if you have multiples.
Can use a light shield for more durability.

    Cons: Cannot dualcast Chaos Wave.
    Only knows Firaga.
    No Curaja.
Unable to wear robes, meaning the only clothes that give Terra MAG is Cupid's Robe, Brave Suit, Vampire Cloak, and Mage's Habit.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva, Carbuncle

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Ling, Trance Terra, Refia, Y'shtola, Cecil, Emperor, Exdeath, Dangerous Ariana, Vanille, Minfilia, Marie, Cerius, Aiden, Rain, Ramza

    #7: Y'Shtola
    [IMG]

IF you build Y'Shtola the MAG route, she actually pretty good (MAG, although small, still contributes to healing, so she still will not lose out on her healing potential). Y'shtola most powerful damaging spell is Holy. What is great about Y'shtola is she can dualcast and since you can build her the mage route, using Cleric Stance knocks her MAG above 1000 in exchange for 100% of her SPR. She can cover her SPR with Divine Seal so she will not lose out on the 100% SPR. SHe can heal + damage, double damage or double heal, however you like.

TM: Stackable. Shards of Genius gives 20% DEF and 20% SPR when using a staff and wearing a robe. Great to give healers and even mages more protection.

Pros: Dualcast in Presence of the Mind.
Great healing, especially through Benediction for full heal to an ally.
Exclusive items boosts her HP and MP.
Shroud of Saints recover her MP and 50% less likely of being targeted for ST attacks.
Divine Seal boosts SPR by 100%.
Cleric Stance 200% MAG in exchange for 100% SPR.
LB VERY powerful than Golem since it mitigates ALL damage (Max is 54%).
Can equip light shields, making her a bit tanky.

Cons: Cleric Stance take away 100% for 200% MAG.
    No Stat passives.
    Raise inferior to Full Life.

    Esper Synergy: Carbuncle, Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Luka, Emperor, Ling, Krile, Aiden, White Knight Noel, Cecil, Charlotte, Cloud of Darkness, Tilith, Soleil, Rain, Ariana, Minfilia, Marie, Santa Roselia

    Honorable Mentions
    Kefka

What a fun-loving clown! This dude from his Mage of Destruction passive lets him get a kick at any human for 50% more damage! In addition, his Roar of Laughter lowers all enemies' stats by 40% whenever he is hit by a physical attack and his Light of Judgement and Last Foostep are very powerful with high modifiers.

TM: This ribbon is good to be completely immune to all status ailments with a lil bit of stats. Feel free to grab it!

Pros: Mage of Destruction passive give 50% more damage to humans and 20% MAG.
Skip give 20% chance of avoiding physical hits.
Can decrease element resistance through LB.
High damage modifiers on magic skills.
Even if silenced, he can still use his magic skills

Cons: Cannot dualcast his magic skills.
    Magic skills have high MP-consumption.
    Trine is useless at 20%.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Ling, White Knight Noel, Cecil, Ariana, Minfilia, Marie, Aiden, Vanille, Shantotto, Rain, Ramza,

    Primm
    [IMG]
This small girl actually packs a powerful kick and a punch! Primm's hybrid is good to handle the enemies' element weakness and her strongest move is Saintly Beam with a 3 damage modifier in magic. She can also operate as a secondary support, with Invigorate for reviving and Healing Waters as a stronger cura. Exclusive from the Mana Mystery Event

TM: This is very heavy in MP, since it is 30%MP and gives 10% MAG and SPR%. If you want to make sure your healers and mages do not run out of MP, then grab Primm's MP.

Pros: Exclusive fist, Aura Glove, is best for Primm with great ATK, MAG and SPR.
    Covers 5/8 of the elements.
    Can revive with Invigorate.
Good passives and recovers MP through Haunting Guard.
Rush boosts ATK and MAG of the team by 40%.
    Can equip shields and helms.

    Cons: Low hybrid modifiers.
    LB is a physical attack.

Esper Synergy: Ifrit, Golem, Diabolos, Ramuh

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Ling, Y'shtola, Cecil, Yun, Marie, Minfilia, Cerius, Ariana, Orlandeau, Soleil, Aiden, Refia, Luka, Rain, Olive, Seven, Elza, Fryevia, Cupid Luna

    Arc

Arc is another wonderful black 5* mage who is able to dualcast as well with the elements of fire, ice and thunder. He also carries a death spell as well.

TM: Omnirod is the 2nd strongest rod in-game. Grab.

    Pros: Dual Black Magic.
Can heal and increase MAG with LB.
    Carries Osmose and Death.
    Cover fire, blizzard and thunder.

Cons: Death is not so much useful.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Rosa, Exdeath, Krile, Ramza, Faris, Cecil, Tilith, Delita, Hope, Ariana, Noctis, Primm, Dark Fina, Shantotto, Ling, Vanille, Elza, Rain, Lightning, Marie, Olive, Lasswell, Fryevia, Yun, Minfilia, Emperor, Seven, White Knight Noel, Cecil, Aiden
    Krile

I've mentioned her in the healer's section, but Krile just works. Dualcast, a dualfront buff if she uses staffs, and can wear light shields and light armor.

    TM: Don't bother.

Pros: Dualcast for attacking and healing.
    Curaja.
Enhancements give her 50% MAG and SPR when using a staff through Dual Font.
    Can equip helms and shields.

Cons: No Esuna to be a better healer.
Strongest spell is Aeroga, meaning she can only work alongside with aero-using units for attacking.

    Esper Synergy: Carbuncle, Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Cloud of Darkness, Rosa, Cecil, Charlotte, Bartz, Exdeath, Ramza, Faris, Arc, Delita, Hope, Dark Fina, White Knight Noel, Noctis, Ariana, Elza, Rain, Luka, Santa Roselia, Cerius, Ling, Marie, Minfilia, Cerius, Y'shtola, Emperor, Aiden,
    White Knight Noel:

(Giving recognition to @Ike Royle for a great strategy of using Ring of Lucii with WKN)
    WKN+Ring Link: http://brave-exvius.com/threads/ultimate-use-for-ring-of-lucii-with-noel.7545/#post-139630

The mage tank... and a tremendous one at that! WK Noel actually does a lot for the holidays and may be the tank for people to push and grab! His passive, Attract, boosts the likelihood of being targeted by 30%. If he use "Bring it On" in battle, he gets targeted by another 80% and reduces all damage taken by 50%. Noel trumps over even Cecil due to the fact he covers the whole party as opposed to Cecil only covering one unit. What is nice about him as well is the fact he has passives boosting his Def and MAG depending on what he is using. Rods and Heavy armor works for him well. Only thing is he can only counter when he is hit by magic attacks. That still does not stop him due to the fact he takes all ST attacks straight to him.

TM: Ice Rosetta is GREAT! for mages. 50 MAG and 50 DEF with a niche 25% ice resistance.

Pros: Attract passive + "Bring It On" = 110% targeting and 50% damage mitigation.
Passives give him 55% MAG depending on equipment.
can have up to 4% DEF depending on equipment.
LB boosts DEF and MAG as well as recovering MP to the whole party.
Can decrease Ice and Wind resistances to enemies.
    Decent ice and wind resistance.
    Counters when hit with magic.
    HP%-silence-and-petrify immunity passive, Winter Guardian.
    High DEF.

    Cons: Severely weak to fire.

    Esper Synergy: Golem, Ramuh

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Ling, Emperor, Exdeath, Dark Fina, Primm, Soleil, Minfilia, Marie, Cerius, Y'shtola, Aiden, Shantotto, Fryevia, Lasswell, Dracu Lasswell, Refia, Lenna, Luka, Santa Roselia

    Dangerous Ariana

She can steal your heart (Maybe). As a mage, she can boost the team's ATK or MAG and can even give everyone an LB buff (150% fill rate). Her event items knocks her damage sky high (Later on, she may get an enhancement on her ATK and MAG buff like in JP, where it gives the whole team 100%).

TM: Her TM is only good for her with Symphonic Flair for the 40% ATK and MAG for using a harp.

Pros: MP songs reduced by half for better MP usage.
Passion passive resistance to petrify and confusion.
    Strong singing buffs.
LB good in reducing thunder and dark resistance.
Encore ability can give her the chance to dual cast.

Cons: Only access to Thundaga and Bioga.
Singing spells locks her for 3 turns.
Pre-Chorus have enemies put their eyes on her for 3 turns with 30% more likely to get jumped.

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Carbuncle

For Osmose and more MAG, Ramuh. For more support, Last Stand and access to banish, Carbuncle.

Unit Synergy: Dark Fina, Exdeath, Emperor, Ace, Noctis, Lightning, Elza, Seven, Randi, White Knight Noel, Cecil, C. Artemios, Marie, Ramza, Shine, Olive, Noctis, Charlotte, Minfilia, Aiden, Rain

    Shantotto
    [IMG]

NOPE! Never will be Popoi! Shantotto! She will gain 5*. For a 4*, she hits hard with her ga-spell! I can't wait for her 5*!

TM: MAG30% is and always will be desired for mages. Grab it.

Pros: Covers 3/4 of the elements.

Cons: WHEN IS HER 5* COMING OUT?!!!

    Esper Synergy: Ramuh, Shiva

Unit Synergy: Noctis, Y'shtola, Ling, Emperor, Exdeath, Dark Fina, Aiden, Rosa, Vanille, Hope, Krile, Dangerous Ariana, Fryevia, Rain, Lasswell, Shine, Olive

You have three options: Ramuh, Diabolos, Shiva, the first being generally the best (highest MAG increase, nice skills like Drain, Osmose, Imperil, Dispel).

Nice! I would also add Creepy Mask (event limited item) as an highest DPS option for mages, followed by Festival Cap (event limited item) and Circlet (story mode - Wind Shrine).

Problem: Not everyone who came after the limited eventd would able to havr a shot in getting the items. My nrxt uofate after finishing the physical unit guide is to put a link to each unit for unit builds I create based on Non-TMS, TMS and event-limited items (And that definitely will take a while).

That I will have to change and take out when I put it down with Krile back in December. This is back in December, but when I started creating Unit build guides, I started to think deeper about those who do not have them and I changed it so my mindset changed a lot compared to 2 months ago. The only exception is if I am talking about a limited unit and it comes with a limited-exclusive item such as Dangerous Ariana.

Will Exdeath still be relevant in the future? I don't have DFina and Ace. Farming 4 L&A is doable for me.

@PapaGembul Yes. He will still be relevant in the future.

Update: Emperor and Dangerous Ariana added.

There is no chest nor head item on tho se mage builds. Could you add/recommend something?
    Edit:
I'm looking for a f2p no tmr or event exclusives for D. Fina and Exdeath. Have no physical dps worth and I rely heavily on them.

I will do some updates, but I really need you to be patient. Combined with the fact I am creating other guide and build threads and calculations with life, this takes a lot of my time. I talked about the weapon and accessories and for mages like Krile, I get more specific since they have more than one way to build them.

ExDeath is harder without Creepy mask+equip hat. Just use Golden Armor and Golden Helm

Or Flame Plate / Ice Mail, if specific elemental resist is needed. Also, Survivor Helm from Colosseum is better, and there is Grand Helm from 2HD Trial, but that one usually goes to Cecil.

Major change to Mage unit guide. Now based on TM and Non-TM Rankings.

Update: Terra, Trance Terra and Kefka added. Also added a Honorable Non-TM Ranking; the rankings have changed.

Why is Exdeath above Ace in TM rankings and Exdeath above emperor in the non TM ratings? Ace can out damage all of the others currently (even trance terra... yes), you just have to treat him like a finisher and actually has same/similar frames as Luneth. It just takes some TMR's to do so which is why he is among the worst non tmr mages imo.

    Otherwise good work.

Edit @SummonerBWM so this message doesn't get lost.
