My apologies for the delay, but I already announced it in the previous 7* batch review that there will be some serious delays coming. I'll try my best to publish the Auron and Jecht reviews as fast as possible though because FFX is life.
If this feels rushed, I want to apologise.

    Sophia:
    [IMG]5*
    [IMG]6*
    [IMG]7*

TMR: Crescent Rod (Rod) - 28 ATK, 135 MAG, (5% MP Refresh + 2x Counter Chance: Sophia Only)
    STMR: Sophia's Hairpin (Accessory) - 60 MAG/SPR, 30% Fire Res, (20% MP + 50% MAG: Sophia Only)

    Overview:
    Sophia
    is an excellent mage.

Her base stats are high, especially her base MAG with a total of 280. This should be the highest base MAG after Freya and... Liquid Metal Slime (oof). Her passive boosts are even better with a total of 170% MAG and 60% MAG TDH. What stands out about Sophia is her high HP stat with 70% innate HP, which makes it easier for her to gain bulk, an important quality for many upcoming trials.

With her own TMR she gains permanet Triple Cast to all of her offensive abilities except for her CD, which is massive. That makes Sophia one of the few mages who has access to permanent T-Cast on their abilities. She also gains double counter chances from her TMR which boosts her 50% counters up to 100%. If she gets hit she will reliably recover 10% HP, 5% MP and fill 2 LB crysts. This is pretty good and the T-Cast obviously will be massive for her abilities. On top of it, she recovers 5% HP/MP each turn, which makes her quite easy to sustain.

Sophia has 4 different 60% imperils with Fire, Ice, Lightning and Earth that she can use, though they aren't the strongest and mostly useful for early phases.
She also has an ice chaining move that has Freeze frames, but a very low modifier of 220% / 420% at level 120. Mostly not worth considering.

Sophia has other moves that you likely won't use:
Scan Enemy, Thunder Flare, Crush, Fireball.

Unfortunately all of her potential is locked behind her 7* abilities. Once you get her to Lvl 110 though you will have access to three different chaining moves: Stone Rain, Efreet and Ravenous Fiend.

The former is a Quake Frame chain that stacks up from 400% to 1150% (150% each). T-Cast Quake is pretty rare and it's weird to chain with others, however with a dupe and her 60% earth imperil it can be a pretty good alternative against trials where earth damage is the way to go.

Her two other chaining moves are copies of Trance Terra's: Fire and Dark chains with Chaos Wave frames that start with a 400% modifier and go up to 1400% (200% each). In her case it's best to go for fire damage though since she has an easy 60% fire imperil at the start of the fight and her LB also imperils fire by 100%!
If you want to use her as dark chainer her CD move Southern Cross will be the way to go. The imperil can be maintained at all times as long as you don't dispel it. With a perfect rotation you have a 100% fire imperil or a 75% fire / dark imperil.

If you need to sustain Sophia even more, she can by draining HP/MP with Blood Scylla or using her CD ability Convert Damage, which deals 50% self HP damage in return for 350 MP and a 200% MAG buff for the following 2 turns.

How does she fare in the meta?
    Sophia
currently is the best mage and will be good for a longer time.

Tiana is locked behind earth and deals less damage while having worse frames. Christine has a pretty bad access to Quad Cast and outside of it only has W-Cast, which makes her naturally worse than Sophia.
Sophia has high MAG, permanent T-Cast, high imperils, three different elements and two of them have frames that will be used on many future mages. What makes her even better is the fact that she can obtain "a lot" of bulk without sacrificing much MAG. Trials will start to hit everybody in your team, thus having some tankiness will be necessary.

Once Elly comes around she won't be at #1 damage dealer anymore, but her elemental versatility damage wise is higher compared to Elly's highest potential being wind locked. Elly's other elemental options are still good, but not on the same level. On top of that, Elly is also very frail opposed to Sophia.

    Good unit.

Sophia's STMR is a different version of Rem's Betrothal Ring. Higher flat stats but lacks the passives. If you combine them they can be a good combo if you actually do hit the MAG % cap. For Sophia herself this is an incredible STMR due to having 60 MAG AND 50% MAG. After the STMR change you can even ditch her 135 rod.

    Fayt:
    [IMG]7*

TMR: Farwell (Sword) - 135 ATK, Light
    STMR: Fayt's Clothes (Clothes) - 38 ATK, 20 DEF/SPR, 50% ATK with Swords, 2 Auto LB

    Overview:
    Fayt's old review: https://brave-exvius.com/threads/unit-review-fayt-star-ocean-3.39011/

I will only talk about his 7* additions. Explanations on his old skillset can be found in the old review.

With his new additions Fayt has access to W-Cast on all of his abilities, which is a great trait as he can combine his 12 turn imbues alongside a chaining move. Previously he had a very bad chaining move due to having horrible frames.

Luckily for him they fixed that! Fayt is yet another AT chainer with his Enhanced Shotgun Blast. If anybody could explain to me why it's named that way I'd be happy. It has a 650% modifier that goes up to 1200% with a slow increase of 50% each use. It takes a lot of turns to get to, though once you get to the point Fayt deals a ton of damage. His imbues last 12 turns, which means you don't waste many actions re-applying his imbues.

With his CD move Enhanced Aerial he has a 1400% finisher, which isn't really relevant. It doesn't seem like he can self-finish it, though its second effect increases his AT mod by 200% for 3 turns. We want to include this in our rotation, but skipping it doesn't change a lot really.

His Limit Burst will also become a part of his rotation. Fayt without his 7 star was using DW and thus his LB was pretty much a waste, though with his W-Ability his TDH build becomes a lot stronger and thus we can use it easily. It has a 1600% modifier at max level with 12 hits, not the best though it imperils all elements by 70% for 3 turns. You can see in the damage calculations that we will use it quite often.

How does he fare in the meta?
    Fayt
does okay. He isn't at the same level of Sora / 2B, but he certainly isn't bad.

After some turns he catches up with Sephiroth, who is at the #5 spot currently, though Sephiroth due to massive access to multiple chaining families will generally stay on #5. Fayt's slow build up hinders him from being top tier as his first 5 turns are not good, which also affects his average damage. If he got his potential at the start of the battle he'd be a lot better.

Another factor that decreases his average damage output is his lack of imperils on his chain or imbue as well as only having a 70% imperil. Many other meta units that don't lack innate imperils often have a 75%~100% imperil available. E.g. Tifa, Sephiroth and 2B, though the former two aren't that much weaker than Fayt.

Generally said though Fayt is in a good spot, but there is a huge powercreep spike coming up within the next months. He is lucky to have AT frames, which will be useful for a long time. He's decently future proof for now. I can't predict his enhancements though.

His STMR is incredible for any sword user, which will be an important piece of armor for current and future TDW units. If you are whale enough I can only recommend grabbing it, keeping two Fayt 7 stars isn't redeeming.

    Rena:
    [IMG] 7*

TMR: Knuckles of Hope (Knuckles) - 20 ATK, 110 SPR, 30% MP, 5% MP Refresh
STMR: Shortcake (Accessory) - 54 SPR, 10% SPR, Ribbon, 5% MP Refresh, 2 Auto LB

    Overview:
    Rena's old review: https://brave-exvius.com/threads/unit-review-rena-star-ocean-2.38920/

I will only talk about her 7* additions. Explanations on her old skillset can be found in the old review.

Rena takes her previous healer / buffer capabilities to a new level and actually does a good job at combining these two roles once again, which speaks for a great role compression if you can pull it off.

Her old W-Cast also affects all of her new abilities except for Light Cross and Mother's Protection, which I will come to later on.

She gains access to various new tools: AoE Revive, 20% mitigation and even a 200% LB Fillrate buff that lasts 3 turns. The AoE revive is pretty nice since it can be used alongside her W-Cast, which means you can raise two (or more) units while healing or something else. If your damage dealers didn't survive the threshhold or counters, having this can be a blessing.
The LB fillrate buff is great for anyone really. Currently there are a lot of units who want to use their LBs very often. Most meta tanks, most meta supports and even some damage dealers like 2B and Hyoh love to spam their LBs.

Rena also does a good job at putting up regens before her LB. Cure All has a regen that's stronger than Curaga as well as a high MP regen, which will recover around 70 MP per turn with the build I provided. Though once you use her LB this ability will be redundant.

I've talked about Rena not being able to cast Light Cross and Mother's Protection twice, but what exactly are these abilities?
Light Cross is an AoE 14 hit SPR chain with a 1040% light modifier and it has Divine Ruination frames. Due to its 14 hits it can perfectly chain with Dualwielders or W-Casted Divine Ruination. It's a nice addition though it doesn't deal a ton of damage and Rena has many other things she can do.

Mother's Protection on the other hand is a CD ability with a 6 turn cooldown and available at Turn 1. With an AoE 130% DEF/SPR buff and an AoE Reraise this is a really good skill to start off any fight or even rebuff after a dispel. 130% DEF/SPR buffs are nothing to laugh at even at our current state of the game and AoE Reraise obviously is very redeeming, however it's Rena's only source of ANY reraise, so be careful.

Lastly her LB costs twice as much (40 crysts) but buffs up to 150% all stas while curing all breaks and applying huge regens. I highly recommend gearing her for LB Fillrate as well as some auto LB to keep it going as it's an amazing LB. You might not be able to fully ditch a support due to lacking elemental resistance buffs and having only 20% mitigations, but if you run a tank like Sieghard who has a 45% AoE mitigation, you might get away by ditching your healer and buffer, though be careful: turn actions can become tight.

How does she fare in the meta?
    Rena
    does well.

She doesn't have the same healing capabilities as e.g. LM Fina or doesn't share the same niche as Folka that will make her an incredible pick in the upcoming trials, but as a secondary healer (/for double healer strats) Rena can be amazing as long as you ensure a high LB uptime. 150% all stat buffs on a unit that provides a ton of heals and regens can be great and sometimes you might find yourself ditching other buffers like MS Nichol for her if you don't need the elemental resistance buffs.

She isn't the best healer nor the best buffer, but she is in a great spot in both categories, making her a unit with great role compression and thus easily finds a spot on many teams and for a lot of content can ditch your healer + buffer. For trials it might not be the best idea, but if you can pull it off you used up 1 slot for 2 roles. Congrats!

Her STMR is an upgraded version of Ribbon with a ton more SPR attached to it as well as auto LB and MP refresh. This is great on literally any unit that doesn't have SPR yet. It increases the survivability by a decent amount, grants Auto LB and even MP refresh which often can be a problem to manage. There's also no reason to keep two Renas.

    Build:
    Knuckles of Hope (110 SPR, 30% MP) + 40% SPR/MP, 50% LB Fillrate
Hairpin of Purity (10 DEF, 24 MAG, 51 SPR)

    2x Arsha's Talisman (40% HP, 20% DEF/SPR)

    Hero's Vow - Earth (30% HP, 20% DEF/SPR, 50% LB Fillrate)

    Conclusion:
The Star Ocean units are definitely good.
Sophia is the currently strongest mage and has some redeeming qualities about her that will keep her usable or maybe even redeeming in the far future due to having a lot of innate bulk. Sharing the same frames with many other future mages is never a bad thing either and her damage output certainly isn't bad.
Rena is a unit with great role compression and a strong base kit that has access to high buffs, high regens and heals as well as some interesting chaining capabilities. She might not be the best as a buffer nor as a healer but can ease up unit slots and can be used for double healer strats quite effectively.
Fayt is "the worst" unit out of this batch though even he isn't horrible. His damage output currently places him at #5 of the damage charts for physical chainers and he has four different elements that he can use as well as a 70% all imperil and AT frames, which are pretty much the future from now on. He isn't excellent but even as a consolation price he is far from being awful.
That being said, the banner can be easily skipped. Sophia is a great unit but doesn't have her own banner, which means RNG can screw you over quite easily despite her step up. Sophia as well as Rena are great units but aren't gamebreaking. Pull for them if you want to, though the current alternatives are still more than serviceable. Sophia can be worth to invest into due to high bulk and high damage if you don't want Elly.

Auron tomorrow. (also I love the actress)

Auron is coming tomorrow and I will definitely record my pulls. I'll (sadly) only go for one lap aka 25k Lapis as well as the KMOG tickets since I'm currently moving out and have to keep as much money as possible for the time being. I hope I will be lucky as I'm definitely hyped up, though the last time I was really hyped during the Tidus banner I got burned hard.

    Nice! Been waiting on this.
I dunno....I feel like with the build you provided Cure All should be outputting more than 70 MP.
Rena's Cure All for me with 1512 SPR (unbuffed) is putting out like ~4.1kHP/~170MP per turn.

Rena is great for arena because of native Stop and AOE Stop removal, something only Ayaka could do before.
I used to have Ayaka spam Odin before but now Rena could open with a 60% AOE Stop with Fix Cloud and Lilith teams are a lot easier to survive now.

limited banners are the {best, worst}. especially splits. people says freegans shouldn't bother, but they're actually what i save up my resources for. not every one is good, but this banner is a gem.

when i "wasted" my tickets and moogles chasing unmatched wizardry i told people the tdh mage meta would happen sooner or later ;D

i've been saving lapis for a exactly this moment and went hard grinding the story this week. but after doing my first step-up ever in this game im happy to report i got 7* sophia! finally a chain partner for my trance terra! ❤️

update: i threw a single regular ticket at the banner and popped a rainbow crystal. sophia #3. it was a hard decision, but i decided to chase that stmr. 3 hops on the step-up later...

    humble brag

under rena’s build you put “Sophia’s Build” by accident (i assume). Other than that great work like usual meme

This. One full lap gave me one Sophia and one Rena. Seems like there's no use for both at 6* sadly, but hey, that's two free raid TMRs I guess.

    Thanks for the review !

It's a decent pair up, though I'd rather go with Sophia + Sophia friend. For 10 man trials though or just lazy blazing through events it should easily do the trick. ::up::

I’ve been struggling with this. What would you recommend? Pulling for Sophia or waiting for Elly?

    -Best mage chainer is TT
-Plan on hitting CNY banner fairly decently
    -F2P, limited resources
-Don’t have any of the S.O. units, nor do I care about Fayt or Rena.

I’m guessing skip? How favorably does this banner situation stack up with the Xeno banner, like in terms of rates/step ups/unit quality?

    Help plz!

    Thanks meme. Nice review.
Would love Sophia to chain with my GLS since GLS friend is hard to find nowsaday. But double rainbows step up is too risky and my resource can do only one lap. waiting to see if Im lucky with those star ocean tickets.

The issue is that Elly (if we get the same as JP) is guaranteed to some extent. In JP you got tickets when pulling a 5k that you could use after collecting 5 to get one of these units guaranteed of your choice. Pulling for Elly was a lot easier in JP than pulling for Sophia. However Sophia is likely the better unit for you due to having a lot more bulk.

would rena and Folka be a workable healer combo for certain future Trials? I got a 7* Rena from random tickets, and only have a single copy of ayaka as pure healers, Rena covers the dispel deficiency for Folka, but not sure if this would be a workable combo

I'm also in some deep shit right now between selecting Elly or Sophia.

Before Sophia it was a pretty choice. Even when she got released I thought Elly's pentacast was a nobrainer.

Now with all the discussion I'm starting to doubt.

I know it all depends on what you have. My main Magic DPS dealers are Barbariccia, Mediena (recently) and Rem (who chains with Barbs). Enough for current content.

But the real shit is coming soon and I know I will need some futureproofness (just like when I got Hyoh).

Based on what I have, I think it's necessary to upgrade. So what are the pros and cons between Elly and Sophia?

Elly has one turn pentacast (6 turn CD), permanent triple cast, insane finishing moves and one wind chaining move (CW family with strange animation that only makes it possible to chain with dupe as I have read in the forum). Covers 4 elements I think.

Sophia has more chaining moves (Quake family and two with CW family), higher bulkiness (this I didn't notice and thanks Meme) and covers 4 elements too I think. She has no finishing moves.

The difference here basically is that Sophia is a chainer while Elly, who can also chain, has more finishing moves.

My question is, are Elly finishing moves usable or will I only have to rely on her chaining move? Is finishing not an option anymore? I thinks these are the questions to be answered honestly because if it is only about her chaining move then I consider Sophia as a better option.
