    As one of the Sworn Six of Paladia, he shows why he is the Vanguard of tanking. He has Defensive Barrier to give the team damage mitigation, but his Incinerating Press is a 2.7x damage modifier with a 100% two-turn provoke. He can even boost his DEF and SPR by 100% if his HP is below 30%. Did I forget he also absorb earth attacks? His Demon Wall is an upgrade from Y'shtola since it can do damage while giving (When max) 54% damage mitigation for 1 turn to the whole team.

    TM: It may not stack, but it is still good for any units to take advantage of if they are able to wear a heavy armor and use a heavy shield. It gives 40% ATK and DEF when using them. Grab it if you ever get Veritas. :)

    Arena: He is able to hit the whole enemy team and he can also decrease the damage his team takes in the arena and make himself stronger than stone when his HP drops. Very good to use.

    Pros: High counter rate.
    Great damage mitigation for the team.
    Absorbs Earth.
    Resist paralyze.
    Guardian has a 60% chance to protect team from physical attacks.
    100% provoke-attack skill.
    Boost DEF and SPR by 100% when HP is below 30%.
    Can protect team from status breaks.

    The tank everyone have been adoring and our very first character from the very first Final Fantasy as well as leading the Dissidia franchise. As a tank, he is able to give strong support to the team. Being able to cut down the team's stats by 45% with Armor Eraser and Arms Eraser is very powerful. He can also use his 100% provoke skill as well and can counter magic attacks by recovering 25% of his max HP and MP.

    TM: No. Just no. Way too many powerful buffs than this TM.

    Arena: Can tank, debuff, counter heal himself, and shuts down light-element attacks and light-element units. Top tier and recommended.

    Pros: Cuts stats by 45%.
    Light immunity.
    Equips almost all weapons and wears all armor.
    Protects whole team with damage mitigation and aoe cover.
    Boosts team's ATK and DEF by 45%.
    Counter self heals his HP and MP.
    Hope greatly boosts DEF when HP is under 30%.
    Enhancements in the future.

    Cons:
    Few skills use a lot of MP.
    Not many attacks to make use of Undead Killer passive.
    Shining Wave is a magic attack.
    Low stat passives compared to other tanks.
    Can only counter by getting hit with magic.

    This general is a powerful shield. He can boost your team's ATK, MAG and increase their LB gauge fill rate by 50%. He can even increase their DEF and SPR and his LB can even decrease the damage the team takes as well.

    TM: Great shield with DEF and SPR. Grab if you have him.

    Arena: Well, he can definitely boost your team's stats. Only problem is he does not mitigate damage like Warrior of Light and Cecil. Feel free to use.

    Pros: Great stat buffs.
    High counter rate.
    Resistant to ailments by 50% and increases LB by 3.
    High DEF.
    Increases likelihood to be attack and can provoke so he can always be targeted.
    Can easily reduce the damage he takes.
    Enhancements in the future.

    Cons: No damage mitigation cover skills like WoL and Cecil.
    Low damage mod for skills to be a damaging tank.

    One of the most favorite unit in this game. His Saintly Wall triggers very high at 75% and mitigate the damage by 50% and he can use curaja, meaning he can be a secondary healer. His LB is very powerful to knock the whole team's stats and he can buff through Focus as well. Def % materias will be helpful for him. IF you want him to have more HP, give him HP% materia. SPR% is also useful because it not only gives him magic defense, but also it can increase his healing as well.

    TM: Powerful light greatsword, which you should grab.

    Arena: He is good against anyone using light attacks. He may buff through LB and can heal as well. As a tank... he's aight...

    Pros: Can mitigate damage.
    High Tide builds his LB gauge.
    LB is one of the strongest buff in the game.
    Focus puts him good in a mage team.
    Holy Light when max gives 20% more SPR and an 1800 HP auto-regen.
    Saintly Wall when max gives a 5% MP regen and 85% chance to protect a unit with 60% physical and magic damage mitigation and a 30% bonus light resistance.

    Cons: Unable to make killer passive useful since he will mainly be tanking and/or healing.
    No forms of attack skills.

    Exclusive for the Christmas holidays. White Knight Noel is currently the strongest tank in the game; A combination of a mage and a tank. What puts him above Cecil is his passive "Attract" to immediately give him 30% more chance to be targeted, but also the "Bring it On" skill to increase the likelihood by another 80% and reducing ALL ST damage by 50%. This makes him being able to protect the whole party as opposed to Cecil only being able to protect one unit. What is nice about him is his passives to increase his MAG and DEF based on the weapon and armor he is using. This allows him to still have the chance to push out damage while at the same time stay tanky. He also has the ability to counter magic.

    TM: One of the best accessory for mage when it comes to MAG. 50 MAG, 50 DEF and a niche 25% ice resistance. Grab it.

    Arena: His size is so big. For him, he can easily mitigate damage for the team and can aoe hit the team with Glacial Wave for magic damage. He has his ice and aero spells to use as well to help give damage as far as a magic tank go. Just watch out for those who use fire attacks as his fire resistance is -25%. Feel free to use.

    Pros: Takes ALL ST attacks to himself and mitigate it through Bring it On.
    Can lower ice and wind resistance.
    Steel 75% damage mitigation; works well with Bring it On.
    Counters magic attacks.
    Immune to petrify and silence.
    Boost his MAG and DEF based on equipment.
    Can paralyze with Glacial Wave.

    Cons: Severely weak to Fire.
    Can only counter magic and not physical.
    Counter is random.

    M. Ramza has a high chance of protecting someone at 75%. not only that, he can resist all status ailments as well. Depending on what he's equipped, he can push either his attack or defense even more to operate however you want him to operate for a tank.

    TM: 20% HP, MP, ATK and MAG. Just grab. Very nice.

    Arena: Well, he has Ultima so you can turn him into a mage and he does not have any aoe physical attacks. Only aoe physical attack is his LB. However, because he is able to fill different roles, he can work fine in the arena.

    Pros: Debuffs for ATK and MAG last for 5 turns.
    Blade of Justice good for chaining.
    High chance to protect a unit through Noble Lineage.
    Immune to ALL status ailments.
    Auto-Refresh.
    High stats.
    Esunaga.
    Boost stats based on equipment.
    Can fill a role of a physical attacker and even a mage due to stat buffs and Ultima.
    Enhancements in the future.

    Cons: Second Wind is only an ST buff.
    Variety can bring difficulty in how to build him.

    Snow is a powerful tank because he can counter not only physical attacks, but also magic attacks as well. Also, he has his own, exclusive buff "Here We Go" (During Hanging Edge event only) which increases his Def and SPR by 50%! The Defender materia (Grab from Hanging Edge event only) greatly attributes to him since it gives him Def + SPR10%. The one concern players should have is to whether or not to put weapons on Snow or not. He gains ATK 50% if he is unarmed. This is up to the players.

    TM: Champion's Belt is a great TM for those who uses fist, since it means an additional 20% ATK and DEF.

    Arena: Since his counter can go as high as 90% if you actually enhance them, he will be reacting against both physical and magic attacks with his punches. The only problem is if he can actually survive the attacks since he cannot wear any heavy armor. Regardless of this problem, still go on and use him.

    Pros: When counters enhanced, 90% chance to counter both physical AND magic attacks.
    50% Draw Attack.
    MP-Efficient; low MP usage.

    Cons: Battle Roar hurts him in exchange for boosting the team's stats (2000 if not max; 500 HP if ability max).
    Cannot wear heavy armor.
    Can only gain 50% ATK bonus when not using any equipment, but he's better off using fists anyway and using a light shield.

    Charlotte for a 5* is a pretty strong tank and can really hold her own. Give her the exclusive Patriot Shield so she will have access to her Cleansing Light ability. What is nice about her is her good Royal Armlet ability to cover units as well as the ability to use Shellga, which is useful for healers. She also comes with an Auto-Regen ability, allowing her to stay alive longer in battle. Def%, SPR%, and HP% materia is a must for Charlotte.

    TM: Not really needed...

    Arena: We have to admit this. We will not see as much Charlotte in the arena since she is a five star, but she will have a six star awakening in the future.

    Pros: Enhancements in the future.
    Exclusive shield gives her Cleansing Light, to remove ailments on the team.
    Auto-Regen.
    Good damage mitigation and cover with Royal Armlet.

    Cons: Shellga out-dated.
    No skills to take advantage of Undead and Demon Killer passives.

    Another 5 star tank. Exclusive during the March on Ifrit and Titan events. Thancred is able
    to do his role decently with some skills to put in some damage as well.

    TM: Follower's Oath is a combination of Rize's TM and a 10% ATK ability, which is good for fighters. Hope you guys were around the two events to get enough of them.

    Arena: Circle of Scorn is decent to AOE everyone and to poison the enemy team, but since he is a 5*, he may not be able to take in as much damage as the other, stronger tanks.

    Pros: Circle of Scorn poisons 50%.
    Can evade physical attacks.
    Can make himself immune to poison and blind through ability, Tempered Will.
    70% provoke in Flash.
    Inflicts stop with LB.
    Exclusive equipment which can boost his HP and DEF.

    Cons: Goad's healing too low and cannot heal self with it.
    Buff to self too low compared to better supports.
    Bloodbath hybrid... why...
    There are equipment that are better than his exclusives.

    Ashe's husband. He is a good tank, being able to heal, remove status ailments and also being able to protect the team and boost the team's light resistance.

    TM: Nice for anyone who needs the 30% HP and 20% DEF for survival. Also carry a niche 30% light resistance. Grab.

    Arena: He heals and removes ailments while taking damage for the team. Pretty much it. Average in dealing damage. He's aight.

    Pros: Good damage mitigation and ok cover with Sentinel.
    Heals and removes ailments.
    Immune to light 50% and immune to blind.
    Can chain with Patriotic Slash.
    Can boost team's light resistance.

    Cons: Not many skills to take advantage of 50% ATK boost from using a sword.
    Royal Obligation lasts for 1 turn.
    Royal Obligation damage mitigation and cover very low compared to Warrior of Lights.
    LB weaker than Cecil's since it cannot boost ATK.

    The former emperor of Zoldaad. He can easily provoke, but also can deal damage while boosting the team's fire resistance as well. He can even work as a chain finisher for a tank.

    TM: Good for physical attack units because of the auto-refresh in addition to the 20% HP and 20% ATK. Please grab his TM.

    Arena: He loses to those with good fire resistance and those using Ifrit. Other than that, he can pretty much deal damage and can even inflict paralyze through Hell Shaft, making it easier to shut down those who rely on evasion. Good to use.

    Pros: Can lower enemy's fire resistance through Suppression.
    Can boost team's DEF and SPR.
    Inflicts paralyze through Hell Shaft while dealing damage.
    Good fire resistance.
    Boost team's fire resistance through Sieg Zoldaad.

    Cons: Restricted to mainly fire attacks.
    Low SPR.

    I have a reason to put her down. She has such a high resistance to elements and also good resistance to status ailments as well. Because of this, she can be turn into a selfish tank, being able to take little damage all by her own. Her Omni-Veil also knocks her element resistance up as well as her party and her Aura Ball will allow her to lower the enemy's ATk strength and to inflict silence on casters. To build her into a tank, you need to stock on her Def% materia and/or SPR% materia. HP% is fine as well. Any materia which will increase her HP, Def or SPR for her to become a tank will be appreciated for her.

    TM: Good for those who have great LBs.

    Arena: A human-eater. Besides the fact other players can instant-kill her with raise, she can bring destruction. An Omni-Veil can easily shut down any units who rely on elemental attacks and status ailments in order to win. Her Barrage is alright.

    Pros: Omni-Veil for 30% element resistance (50% status resistance to team when enhanced), Comeback and Protectga.
    High Damage through Man-Eater passives.

    Cons: Omni-Veil high MP-usage.
    Barrage is irrelevant.
    No other spells besides Thundaga and MAG mediocre.

Get a 6* and then we can talk). Golem can give him the Last Stand ability and a provoke skill and building him up around his DEF, HP and SPR will help him to become a decent tank.

    Arena: He's a story unit so... yea. He can easily recover his MP with his trial equipment and if you max out his Burning Soul passive and he can buff your team stats as well. A high counter as well as being able to fill his LB gauge faster can make up for his average damage. Feel free to use him; There are always better units.

    Pros: Leadership boosts ATK, DEF, SPR, and MAG by 40%.
    Immediately removes all status ailments after battle with Knight's Pride.
    Increases LB gauge.
    High counter rate.

    Cons: Uses up a lot of MP with Leadership.
    Low stats in the 110s.

    Due to the fact he has the chance to dodge physical attacks, immediately dodge one physical attack through Speedster and then can dodge three more through Sonic Blast, he can be used as a secondary tank since he has a provoke skill, Aggravate.

    TM: Must grab if you have him. Helm with ATK is hard to come by and this helm has 28 ATk in addition to the 60 DEF. Plus, it gives immunity to disease and petrify.

    Arena: Since he can immediately evade a physical attack, he can keep himself safe very well. His Vortex hits AOE and also apply a wind element to his attacks while also AOE lowering wind resistance by 50%. Very good for the arena.

    He's a Prince of Trades for a reason. He is able to use shields and his ability to evade can make him a good choice for a secondary tank. If you do not want to use his FIsh ability, then a provoke from Golem is good enough. Golem will also give him the Last Stand ability as well.

    TM: Ring of the Lucii is very great for mages and some supports. It gives access to a counter Holy-MP regen, a Death spell and the most powerful spell in the game, Alterna. It also give Counter and Evasion as well.

    Arena: Forever king. Evasion is annoying and flasks can be scary, especially if he inflicts stop.

    Pros: Power of Kings passive boosts his stats depending on the weapon he's carrying.
    Have a counter heal.
    Most powerful offensive-LB in the game.
    Comeback revive at 100%.
    Good support with Cover heal and Link and can support himself with Point Warp.
    Great status-ailment Flask skills.

    Cons: High MP-usage.
    Need around 30 LB crystals to use LB.

    With strong buffs, good damage mitigation, resistance to some ailments as well as to even boost his ATK and DEF when below 35% HP, he can be good to turn into a tank. Golem approves.

    TM: A nice helm which gives 15% resistance to the elements except dark and nice DEF and some SPR. Grab.

    Arena: He can definitely buff and I honestly would consider him the counter king. Since he can avoid magic as well, he can be difficult to take down.

    Pros:
    Hero's Crest boost a unit's stats by 100%.
    Archadian Light boost team's stats by 60% and give resistance to blind, confuse, paralyze and disease.
    Greatly boost stats based on equipments.
    Imperial Command passive boosts his HP, DEF and gives him an mp-regen.
    Can damage mitigate through Word of Law and his LB.
    Easily counters at 50%.
    Recovers a unit's HP and MP.
    Can survive a fatal hit through Safety, giving him 1 HP.
    Boost team's element resistance through Bastion.
    Berserk Crest gives 150% ATK and berserk status to an ally unit.
    Can decrease enemy's light resistance.

    Cons:
    Too much versatility to decide how to rotate through skills.
    Medicine Lore irrelevant. He is not Ilias.
    Word of Law and LB only 2 turns on damage mitigation.

    He is meant to reduce the enemies stats and since he can also give the team damage mitigation and also can use a shield, building him up as a tank and even putting Golem on him will make him worthwhile, especially since he can evade.

    TM: THIS. IS. Love. Carries 4 abilities. Can give damage mitigation to team by 40%. 40%! This pod also increases teh drop rate of items, a heal ability that splits over 3 turns, and a great damage (3x damage mod) that can be used for chaining with 8 hits. Grab please.

    Arena: Inflicts powerful status ailments (10% more of a chance than Noctis and Amelia), lower stats and resistance, damage mitigation and evades. Great unit to use.

    Pros: Great stat and resistance reduction.
    Good evade-and-counter passive.
    Powerful LB in inflcicting disease and status breaks.
    Good selection of weapon equipment.

    Cons: No attack skills outside of Self Destruct: 9S and Counter Attack.

    Just wondering for WKN, coul you also use espers: Ramuh or Shiva as it would boost his mag dmg?

    Yes, especially Ramuh. Ramuh is stronger than Shiva in MAG so Ramuh would be preferred. WKN already have a weakness to fire so Shiva would only make it worse.

    Wow this is nice, it actually gave me an idea to turn CoD to a support/tank, it's just sad that there are only a handful of good defensive items for her. I'd love to give her a shield, maybe that Charlotte TM wouldn't be so bad for secondary tanks now huh.
