A young lady who rides a coeurl. Nalu lives in her own little corner of the Quicksand Valley in Crystallis, and drives back any and all who dare enter her domain. She is always accompanied by a coeurl she named "Est" with whom she shares a deep bond based on the great trust they have in each other. Their mutual understanding and synchronization in battle renders them almost untouchable.
Fighting the Coeurls in FFXV always felt like a pain without using magic spells. Maybe riding them would have been more effective? /s

    Pros:
First chocobo riders, now coeurl riders? There are so many other cool mounts.

Nalu has strong base stats with high HP/DEF/SPR and great ATK. Still, that's pretty common as a 7* unit currently, so it shouldn't be as surprising.
She does have many different boosts though, with a total of 80% innate ATK when equipped with spears, 100% TDH, 30% HP/DEF and 20% SPR, making her decently beefy, but there will be a strong increase in ATK once we get to her trust ability.
Regarding Nalu's status ailment protections she is protected against poison, blind, paralyze and disease. Not the most amazing ones but it's still nice to innately resist half of all status ailments.

About her trust ability... it adds a lot of ATK. Her own Trust Master is an unstackable materia that increases your TDH by 50% and ATK by 25%. Once you equip it onto Nalu you get another 25% ATK boost and another 50% TDH for a total of 50% ATK and 100% TDH once equipped. This boosts up her total innate TDH to 200% with 130% ATK. Through that Nalu will have an high ATK stat to show off with.
It's semi-important to say that if you played for a longer time now and lack TDH gear, it is a huge advantage to have 200% innately. There were two TDH spears that could be obtained somewhat easily in the past. Zodiac Spear and Stoss Spear, though Stoss Spear required you to obtain Aranea.

Alongside a high ATK stat, Nalu also has killers. Three to be exact: Beasts, insects and plants. Her killers actually go up to 100%, so while Ifrit 3* for instance doesn't share the insect killer, you can already hit 225% killers with Ifrit + her innate passives. A nice boost in damage once it applies.

Before we get to Nalu's main damaging abilities, she has some tools I'd like to talk about firstly.

Blessings of the Forest can be an easy way to set up an OTKO for an event, for a trial, whatever. It recovers her own HP by 30% while removing all ATK/DEF breaks. So far so fine. Its main selling point is the self 4 turn 130% ATK/DEF buff. Obviously there are easier ways to buff up her ATK, but not everybody has the strongest buffers and some don't have any. Might be interesting for you if you are one of these players.

Wild Battlecry could also fall under a similar category. Nalu has innately 30% lightning resistance while Wild Battlecry is an AoE 70% lightning resistance buff with an AoE 100% ATK buff, both lasting for 3 turns total. Meaning against bosses that deal lightning damage this can be handy as well as ... if you lack buffers and want to buff up Nalu AND your possible finisher. This sounds more niche than useful, but it still has its usage for players who aren't blessed to have top tier units or just started playing the game.

For story events, story or generally easy content and even Arena content, having a decently powerful AoE attack can be helpful and Nalu has that. Blaster not only has a 300% modifier, but it also comes with an AoE 30% paralyze / petrification infliction. I'll talk about that in the arena section a little bit more.

With 200% innate TDH, what would be the first thing that comes to your mind?
At least in my mind, I'd ask myself "has the unit an imbue / innate element?".
And yes, Nalu has one. Lightning Spear Jab is a 400% ST move that adds lightning element onto her attacks for 5 turns. The equivalent of Jecht Shot from Tidus.

Did I say Tidus? Hm, I wonder who Nalu can chain with...
Thunder Spear, a ST 500% modifier with a 60% lightning imperil and... OH 12 hits. And yes, it does chain with Tidus, Lightning and Camille. About its synergy with these units I'll talk in the Side-Notes. Thunder Spear itself combined with her high ATK stat and imbues looks promising so far.

While Thunder Spear was lurking around a 500% modifier, Nalu's CD ability, which is available on turn 3 with a 3 turn cooldown, is an ability you definitely want to use in your rotations.
It has 12 hits, **Its modifier is 1100% + AoE **, making this one powerful move if you include all the previous abilities while having such a high ATK stat. Doesn't share the same frames as Thunder Spear.

    Oh wait--
Nalu's Bond with Est adds multipliers. 70% multiplier for Blaster, Lightning Spear Jab, Thunder Fang and Thunder Spear. While it remains being a 70% boost for the first three ones, it's actually a 140% modifier boost for Thunder Spear.
The 70% modifier addition gets added to the DEF ignore bonus. Thunder Spear originally is a 250% mod with 50% def ignore (effectively 500%). Now it's a 320% mod with 50% def ignore, thus a 640% one.

I skipped something very important for Nalu. Her innate 100% hightide. It'll pay off now.
Nalu's Limit Burst comes with a cost of 25, which can be quite easily obtained with the Auto-LB coming with TDH gear and either Eccentrick or MS Nichol's buffs.
At max it has 23 hits and might be tricky to chain, but it's more than worth it. An AoE 1200 modifier, an AoE 100% lightning imperil AND an AoE 140% ATK buff. That is some serious damage and even when running no dupes of her can be utilised for simply imperilling + the ATK buff to increase your OTKO potential.
Especially dangerous when paired with Squall's STMR...

    Cons:
We had this before with Squall and Rinoa, Nalu's kit currently is mostly fine. I'll talk about the things that aren't as great, though mostly it's the future once again.

Nalu compared to other physical chainers has a nasty MP consumption. Not because of W-Ability, but because of her own awful MP stat. She has no innate MP passives, she has no innate MP refreshs and a lot of physical gear doesn't add a lot of MP that could keep her going. Thunder Spear / Fang cost 54 MP or 64 MP per turn and when looking at her damage builds that lasts maybe around 6~7 turns.
To be fair, most content shouldn't survive that long with the 7* powercreep.

Nalu's future might not be as dark as Squall's is, but it's still... not ideal.
If we take a look at the JP schedule we should get to the point of reaching Hyoh soon. And once we get Hyoh, you will see many W-Ability chainers. Tidus might also come to us soon-ish, in the following batches we will also see Nyx 7* who is a strong chainer with enhancements.
Once we have many W-Ability chainers and the other TDW chainers, Nalu will be stuck casting her abilities once. Which means finding an ideal chaining partner will be difficult. Even Tidus will move on from casting his Quick Hit once (hopefully permanent W-Ability please).
I could be wrong since we had several schedule changes in the past and the longer e.g. Hyoh gets delayed the longer will Nalu "live".

    Side-Notes:
    There are no enhancements for
    Nalu yet.
Instead of talking about everything in the cons section, let's take a look at Nalu's chaining partner synergies and how to possibly use them.
In regular trials you definitely want to run two Nalus if possible simply because of her LB chaining which is her most powerful option and adding the strong lightning imperil. But for 10 man trials using a TDH FD Tidus (if you have all that gear) can prove to be very effective under ONE circumstance:
Use Desch. You really don't see that guy at all except for the upcoming Omega clears occasionally. In 10 man trials you have the needed slots and Desch can provide breaks if needed. He is RNG reliant, but it's not AS bad as it sounds. If you can get that Lightning imbue onto your TDH FD Tidus, chaining him with Nal will be a super strong option. Nal's water options are a huge drop in damage, though she should be the best chaining partner for TDH FD Tidus either way.
Using Lightning alongside her can be used the same as with TDH FD Tidus utilising Desch or equipping Sparky. For Lightning herself it'll be a damage drop but it should be the better option IF you have the TDH gear.
If you lack the TDH gear... just use DW on Nalu. Hurts to say that, but eh.

    Best In Slot:
One build with STMRs, one without any. As usual, no limited TMRs (sunbreaker would be the better option than Stoss Spear for the no STMR build).
Do note that Nalu gets a huge boost from her own STMR as she doesn't have to use up a turn for imbueing lightning, having an incredible ATK boost and can also utilise Squall's STMR well.
Stoss Spear (140 ATK, ~1.3x AVG damage)

    2206 ATK
    508 DEF
    417 SPR
Vajrayana (175 ATK, Lightning, ~1.25x AVG damage)

    The Subservient (80% ATK)
    SSP-Wind (50% ATK)
    ADV 5 (40% ATK/DEF/SPR)
Swift Hunter (50% TDH, 25% ATK)

    Stats with Titan 3*:
    7478 HP
    358 MP
    2539 ATK (almost 2650)
    451 DEF
    403 SPR

    Arena:
    Nalu
is a decent Arena unit as long as you already have chainers. She can easily hit 100% accuracy as well as having a strong AoE 1-Hit move that also has an added chance of 30% paralyze / petrification chance. Nalu also has decent innate status ailment protection and high HP due to the 7* upgrade.

    Nalu [IMG]VS [IMG]Lightning
    • Nalu has way higher base ATK
    • Nalu has innate 200% TDH
    • Nalu has 3 100% killers
    • Nalu can imbue lightning
    • Nalu can imperil lightning by 60% / 100% while chaining
    • Both have Quick Hit frames
    • Both focus on lightning element
    • Lightning has a self 150% buff
    • Lightning has a 75% lightning imperil without chains
    • Lightning has 30% TDW
Currently chainers don't have that much utility and comparing much except for their damage output isn't that helpful.
Though in usage these two are different as they can work together or with their other chaining partners. If you choose to use Nalu and have Desch in your 10 man party, you can make a very strong team when using a TDH FD Tidus alongside Nalu. Or you can make Lightning go the Sparky DH route.
If you choose to use Lightning, you'll have to go with a DW Tidus or DW / TDH Nalu. Way easier to set up but not as powerful as the Nalu combination.
    Now for the damage...
    Assuming 100% ATK buff
    ATK post buff: 2470
    Assuming spark chains

AVG chain modifier: 3.53 (Thunder Fang / Thunder Spear)
AVG chain modifier: 3.73 (Limit Burst)

    Turn 1: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 4.7 x 1.15 = 42,867,973 (Thunder Spear Jab)
    Turn 2: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 6.4 x 3.53 x 1.3 = 232,935,290 (Thunder Spear)
    Turn 3: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 11.7 x 3.53 x 1.6 = 524,104,403 (Thunder Fang)
    Turn 4: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 12 x 3.73 x 1.8 = 638,998,504 (Limit Burst)
    Turn 5: 2575^2 x 1.3 x 6.4 x 3.53 x 2 = 389,477,608 (Thunder Spear)

    AVG damage: 365,676,755
    ATK post 100% buff: 1646 | 1661
    ATK post 150% buff: 1767 | 1782
    Assuming spark chains
    Average chain modifier: 3.556
Avg Chain Mod Crushing Blow: 1.62 (?)

    Turn 1: 1646^2 x 6.5 x 1.62 + 1661^2 x 6.5 x 1.62 x 1.75 = 79,369,114 (Crushing Blow +2)
    Turn 2: [ 1646^2 x 7.2 x 3.556 + 1782^2 x 7.2 x 4 ] x 1.75 = 281,438,938 (Endless Army)
    Turn 3: [ 1767^2 x 7.2 x 3.556 + 1782^2 x 7.2 x 4 ] x 1.75 = 299,942,441 (Endless Army)
    Turn 4: [ 1767^2 x 7.2 x 3.556 + 1782^2 x 7.2 x 4 ] x 1.75 = 299,942,441 (Endless Army)

    AVG damage: 240,173,233
    -> 36% lower than Nalu (365,676,755)
Obviously Nalu has the advantage of assuming dupe chaining in this one. But the difference in their damage output is really high. Even without using your LB Thunder Spear + Thunder Fang are really strong.
Lightning has an easier time freeing up materia slots for killers, especially with STMRs. However, Nalu gains a HUGE damage boost by equipping her own STMR as well as a way easier rotation and also has innately 3 decently common 100% killers. Nalu currently also has the better 10 man trial potential IF you happen to have the needed gear, which is why...
    Nalu wins.

    Nalu [IMG]VS [IMG]Squall
    • Nalu has way higher ATK passives (50%)
    • Nalu has higher TDH passives (50%)
    • Nalu has 3 100% killers
    • Nalu can imbue lightning
    • Nalu can imperil lightning by 60% / 100%
    • Nalu can AoE chain + ATK buff + Lightning imperil
    • Nalu has 3 chaining partners
    • Nalu can AoE buff lightning resistance
    • Squall has higher base ATK
    • Squall has W-Ability
    • Squall has 4 different 60% imperils
    • Squall can self-cap chains
Nalu already has a big advantage over Squall: the ability to imbue lightning.
Squall's main issue is the lack of imbues while also having low chaining modifiers.
Since both are quite linear chainers, I'd first look at their damage before going more into detail.
    Assuming 100% ATK buff
    ATK post buff: 2470
    Assuming spark chains

AVG chain modifier: 3.53 (Thunder Fang / Thunder Spear)
AVG chain modifier: 3.73 (Limit Burst)

    Turn 1: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 4.7 x 1.15 = 42,867,973 (Thunder Spear Jab)
    Turn 2: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 6.4 x 3.53 x 1.3 = 232,935,290 (Thunder Spear)
    Turn 3: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 11.7 x 3.53 x 1.6 = 524,104,403 (Thunder Fang)
    Turn 4: 2470^2 x 1.3 x 12 x 3.73 x 1.8 = 638,998,504 (Limit Burst)
    Turn 5: 2575^2 x 1.3 x 6.4 x 3.53 x 2 = 389,477,608 (Thunder Spear)

    AVG damage: 365,676,755
    ATK post 100% buff: 2443
    Assuming spark chains
    Average chain modifier: 3.445

    Turn 1: 2443^2 x 1.3 x 2.25 x 3.445 + 2443^2 x 1.3 x 6 x 4 = 246,349,175 (X Barret + Keen Edge)
    Turn X+1: 2443^2 x 1.3 x 2.25 x 3.445 x 1.6 + 2443^2 x 1.3 x 6 x 4 = 282,433,060 (X Barret + Keen Edge)

    AVG Damage (Turn 1-5): 275216283
    -> ~ 25% lower than Nalu ( 365676755 )
    This one is very simple:
Nalu has two chaining partners that can currently work well with her depending on your team / gear in 10 man trials while she has 3 decently common 100% killers as well as higher damage output. Since Squall needs dupes to chain perfectly there is nothing wrong with using two Nalus as comparison, too.
    Nalu wins.

    Trust Master Reward:
In JP this TMR wasn't as desired because Cloud's TMR was able to stack. But in GL we don't have that luxury.
Swift Hunter adds 50% TDH and 25% ATK, making it a BiS slot for any unit with 0% TDH, 50% TDH or 150% TDH currently. Most importantly for future units like Nyx, Tidus or even Squall. It'll also synergise very well with the upcoming Beatrix STMR (50% ATK+TDH with large swords) and is a great alternative for players who didn't get a Cloud either way.
If you lack TDH and feel like you really want to compensate the missing Cloud TMR, this might be your chance.

    Super Trust Master Reward:
175 ATK spear, two handed, 100~150% damage variance AND innate thunder lightning does seem pretty obnoxious... and it is. This is the first one of its kind with so much power and innate element almost screaming for W ability units.
There's one problem though: Lance users are quite rare. Obviously Nalu herself would love to get that STMR, but a look in the future reveals that only really Cid is going to be a "real" spear user.
However, for non-limited STMRs this is a massive weapon for Hyou. Hyou has no way to imbue himself while he has a 100% fire / lightning imperil. There will be another non-limited option in Excalibur (FFBE), but that one requires external holy imperils. If you are a whale and want to prepare an insane Hyou, here you go!
Otherwise not worth to aim for really.

    Conclusion:
    Nalu
, as all of the other 7*s, is currently a strong unit.
She has a fair amount of damage to work with. Three 100% killers, 200% TDH with 130% ATK, high modifiers with strong imperils and even a really strong Limit Burst as of right now.
Nalu's scaling with STMRs, especially her own, is incredible as of right now.
But why was nobody excited for her unit per se? Because of her future. Nalu lacks W-Abiity, which is the key for powercreep and physical chainers once we hit Hyoh pretty much. While others will be able to deal more than double her damage AND also having T-Cast available, such as Tidus and Hyou, she will just watch them. The inability to W-Cast as a TDH chainer is a major drawback because it really makes using chaining partners a lot harder.
However, Nalu (unless GE units) will be the strongest chainer until Hyou, which means that she'll be good enough to clear content for a long time from now on. Especially with our trials being powercrept to oblivion.
Going for one of her might not be a bad idea though. Nalu gets her chaining move at 6 stars with a 500% modifier and already 100% innate TDH. You'd get the probably wanted TMR out of her while having a strong TDH chainer for your Tidus (if you use him that way). So far she has one of the best 6 stars out of all current 7 stars.
Overall I'd say Nalu is good because her 6 star is serviceable, her 7 star currently is very strong and will be able to serve the damage dealer role for a good amount of time. Powercreep won't be nice to her though.

Thanks for the review. I'm going to pull a bit for her hoping for her TMR. I still don't have a single chainer in Quick Hit family (except Camille), so she may be the first chainer in that family for me as well. LoL.

Hmm... Tempted to toss a ticket or two her way in hopes that she can chain with 7* Queen in the very near future.

Great review, as always sir. I do have a question though concerning your last line of the review of "Powercreep won't be nice to her though", in that who will powercreep be nice to for DPS other than Hyoh?
Because I haven't heard on here of anyone that we have, or may see in the near future, who will be able to hold up to the onslaught of "built for 7 star" characters. It makes me feel like I'm wasting my time with investing in any character I currently have.

Units like Nalu is part of the reason I despise the w-ability meta. They made so many nice units underwhelming from night to day. Like, Nalu is the highest physical damage unit, and in one month someone will outclass her for around twice her damage.

Lightning is currently the #1 rated chainer in GL. She was first place for exactly 1 week lolz

In the next 6 months, the #1 DD in the game will literally change no less than 10 times. The top current units won’t even be top 20 by then. Power creep is about to get REAL, and it starts with Hyoh. In JP (10ish months ahead?) Hyoh isn’t too 10 DD anymore.

So in a sense, you kind of are playing with future-irrelevant units, at least your DDs. Support/Healers/Tanks all stay relevant, not a lot of movement in their ranks over the next 8 months or so. DD get all the glory, but they change like the weather. Always something bigger, better, stronger right around the next corner. It’s how Gumi makes their money.

Blaster is a staple attack with lightning damage and paralyze/petrification depending on the game from the actual Coeurl, so I hope the animation reflects that :)
