Viktor Marchenko is an outspoken member of the Augmented Rights Coalition - an international, non-governmental group of augmented activists fighting for the fair treatment of transhumans in another world. Marchenko has radical leanings, and his charismatic personality allows him to sway opinions and rile up his followers. Heavily augmented, he is thought to be responsible for organizing multiple attacks that he believes will help to further their cause. However, Marchenko is not just a brutish hulk; he is extremely intelligent and is well versed in the history of past revolutionaries.
I am back from Cologne, got the sleep I needed and here it is, the Viktor review! :)

    Pros:
    Viktor
is a unit that's very fun to use and you'll see why.

Viktor's base stats are well rounded with high HP, very high ATK/DEF and decent SPR. Though you'll mostly want to use his DEF. His passives aren't too shabby either with a total of 100% DEF, 40% HP/SPR and 20% ATK/MP. These will become more interesting with his own TMR though.

Once equipped with his own TMR at 7* Viktor will gain 20% HP and 30% DEF from his TMR AND another 30% ATK/DEF from his trust ability. Since his TMR adds a high HP regen as well as 10% MP refresh the lack of innate MP refreshing passives is already dealt with.
His trust ability adds more than that though. True dualwield is a thing nowadays and we are getting introduced to True Dualwield for DEF. With 40% DEF TDW you will gain 40% equipment DEF from your gear when wielding two weapons. Meaning your e.g. 50 DEF armor will give you a total of 70 DEF now. And this works well with Viktor's innate Dualwield so you won't have to worry about giving him a DW materia.

Having access to decent breaks always proved to be handy in many occasions and I'm glad to tell you that Viktor has them as well.
But Viktor doesn't have the traditional breaksplit with ATK/MAG and DEF/SPR. Viktor has an AoE 50% ATK/DEF and MAG/SPR break, which reminds me a lot of 9S and depending on the trial / event can be better and worse than the breaksplits we are used to.
Either way, 50% breaks, especially AoE, are good and make Viktor more versatile and more slot efficient if needed.

Showdown and Confrontation are both provoke skills.
The first one grants you a 5 turn 100% provoke alongside a 100% ATK/DEF buff and increasing Viktor's LB gauge by 1-4 randomly, which is decent though 100% buffs are mostly covered or even outperformed in pretty much any current team.
Confrontation however grants you a 5 turn 100% provoke as well as a 25% mitigation buff at the same time. This will prove a lot more handy if you don't use MS Nichol's 30% mitigation buff simply because the other buffs added to his first provoke aren't that amazing and damage mitigation is always effective.

Even though Viktor's incoming abilities are quite selfish, they help him being more self-sufficient.

You know... being able to cure stop and charm for yourself is an... amazing trait.
Implanted Rebreather cures Viktor from all status ailments and breaks and makes him immune to any negative buff for the next three turns. Break resistance, stop/charm resistance, status ailment resistance. Pretty nice, though I'd only use it to prevent incoming stops / charms.
And yeah, as I just said, it also has the added effect of curing stop and charm, which makes no sense because you can't use any action with a unit that's stopped or charmed. Or both.

Viktor's other ability is a lot more simple and can free up a turn for healing. Biocell Restoration recovers 10000 HP and 200 MP. Simple but effective. If Viktor doesn't get hit on a turn due to the boss charging up or your healer is busy applying a reraise, this can be great to have even though if you want a tanky Viktor he might not get fully recovered by this.

We didn't get Gabranth yet but that will not stop units from having DEF scalings!
Viktor has one chaining move and several finishing move.

Viktor's chaining move, Security System, is an AoE 650% modifier with 30 hits and the same frames as Lunera. This doesn't scale with ATK but with DEF. DEF scalings behave like ATK scalings, they will hit the enemy DEF, they will take weapon elements and killers into account as well as Dualwield and weapon variance.
He'll be able to deal decent damage with that currently, but will gain more importance in the future.
    For more information: Side-Notes.

His finisher abilities are a lot more defining for Viktor though. And all of them will scale with DEF.

Before we take a look at his big guns, Viktor can buff his own human or machine killers by 75% with a ST 400% finisher. Once you get him up to lvl 120 the modifiers of these two will go up to 600%.
Human killer is always great because of most 10 man trials who often share a human type and thus make this an effective 37.5% killer. Not bad for planning a burst turn or even OTKO.

His generic finisher, Takedown, is a big step up from his killer finishers. It starts off as a ST 750% finisher and at lvl 120 becomes a 950% finisher which already can deal a lot of potential damage.
With DW you might have issues fully finishing this one.

His two CD finishers, Icarus Dash and Plasma Bolt are a lot stronger than Takedown. And I mean a lot stronger.
Both are firstly available at Turn 5 and have a 5 turn cooldown, so if you wait one turn you can rotate easily between them, Takedown and your provoke.
Both of them have a ST 1850% modifier, which is really high currently, while each of them respectively imperil Lightning or Fire by 75% for 3 turns to set up

His Limit Burst, while only gaining support from his Showdown provoke, is worth using as a finisher (if you don't use DW) even at level 1. It has a minimum modifier of AoE 1210% and goes up to a max of 1500%, so if you want to min/max Viktor you can level it up, but waiting for his CD finishers might be better if you want burst damage.

His last CD move, Augmented TITAN, isn't really worth using over Guard unless you want to prepare for an incoming threshhold due to the 20% physical mitigation that can stack with his 25% generic mitigation. Early on the 4000 HP barrier can be good, but after your first provoke is up I wouldn't bother with it too much.

    Cons:
Big guy doesn't have many cons currently. Some stuff I'll keep in the Side-Notes section.

Viktor is surprisingly squishy if you want to make him a damage dealer. Obviously you could just ignore his provoke then and make him a pure damage dealer. That way he becomes a lot less unique though.

His chaining efficiency currently isn't as prominent due to the lack of chaining partners. Lunera isn't a great option.
There will be a few chaining partners that Viktor will work really well with, but since GL already changed the 7* awakening batches we might not see them within the next 1-2 months.

Viktor might only be a provoke tank, but CURRENTLY that's not an issue. What is an issue is his 25% mitigation from his provoke.
Recent trials and even new ones, such as Omega, tend to deal a lot of damage through ST attacks and having mitigation is important. Compared to others his innate mitigation is not high and while for older content that's completely fine due to 7* stats, it might just be the reason why he died for you.

He also lacks all kinds of status ailment protections if you aren't willing to use a turn up for that. Or if the boss is going ham with status ailments on turn 1 already.

As I said, currently Viktor really doesn't lack that much.

    Side-Notes:
    Doesn't exist in JP.
Viktor will receive buffs in performance as well as a lot more competition.
In the future we will see other 30 hit chainers such as Loren. And Loren will be one of the best 7*s due to her insane breaks. Having a provoke tank that can chain perfectly with a strong breaker makes for insane slot efficiency in that regard. Generally dealing damage while provoking is great and Viktor does that well for now.
In the future provoke tanks will fall out of favor.
Many bosses will swap from one AoE type of damage and a lot of ST attacks to more AoE damage (often even both Physical and Magic) + a few ST attacks. That'd still make a provoke tank worth using occasionally, but...
Viktor's competition will be used as a provoker often enough.
Wilhelm has an AoE cover + provoke, A.Rain has an AoE cover + provoke, GL M.Ramza will have an AoE cover + provoke, future Sieghard with have an AoE cover + provoke, future Gabranth will have an AoE cover + provoke and a lot of my friends have been using Chow and Basch with a provoke set through Moogle Plushie and completely ditched theirs. Often you can use your Healer (/+ reraise) to keep this strategy up currently and I haven't seen a provoke tank in a long time. Most damage will come from AoE. If you look at the past JP trials you don't see provoke tanks for most clears anymore.
You can fix this through using i.Nichol, but I don't like including other limited units in my reviews that way. Viktor might also not be tanky enough for that.

    Best In Slot:
If you want him to be tankier, just swap out the 40% DEF materias for Patriotic Recalls.
Interestingly enough, his damage build actually uses Fixed Dice because DEF scalings take weapon variance into account and he doesn't lose a lot of DEF from using FD. That way his counters will also be way stronger.
    No limited TMRs as always.
Fixed Dice (1 ATK, 1.2~6.5x variance)
Grand Helm (45 DEF, 20% DEF)
Grand Armor (72 DEF, 28 SPR, 15% HP)
Judge Magister Cloak (35 DEF, 10% HP)
    Celestial Glove (30 ATK/DEF/SPR)
    Panzer Omega (40% DEF/SPR, -75% lightning resistance)
    ADV 5 (40% ATK/DEF/SPR)
    Drowned King (40% DEF)
Energy Converter (20% HP, 30% DEF, 10% MP refresh)

    Stats with Titan 3*:
    10399 HP
    436 MP
    613 ATK
    1317 DEF
    587 SPR
Fixed Dice (1 ATK, 1.2-6.5 variance)
    Rider's Helm (28 ATK, 60 DEF)
    Imperial Armor (110 DEF/SPR, 20% HP)
Judge Magister Cloak (35 DEF, 10% HP)
    Celestial Glove (30 ATK/DEF/SPR)
    Marchenko's Secrets (80% DEF)
    Panzer Omega (40% DEF/SPR)
Energy Converter (20% HP, 30% DEF, 10% MP refresh)
    ADV 5 (40% ATK/DEF/SPR)

    Stats with Titan 3*:
    10676 HP
    436 MP
    565 ATK
    1370 DEF
    669 SPR

How is the unit as a 6*?
Viktor as a single 6 star unit is serviceable
. Decently tanky, still has his two provokes etc.
The only things he gains at 7 star is his chaining move and his stronger finishers, but he still has Takedown in his previous form and can be used as a provoker if you need one.
He won't be as good as Wilhelm / M.Ramza mainly due to his damage not being amazing yet and both of these boys having insane tank stats and massive support capabilities, but if you just started out or never pulled one of them Viktor can be used. Just make sure to dedicate more of your gear to survivability than DEF.

    Arena:
    Viktor
can prove really strong in the Arena. He can equip 2-Handed weapons for accuracy, he has an AoE chaining move with a high hit count and can be built insanely tanky in Arena due to hitting the dmg cap quite quickly anyway.
Viktor can perfectly chain with Lunera currently, who isn't that great in Arena due to wind/holy resistance but if you happen to have two 7* Viktors... go for it.

    Viktor [IMG]Damage Output

Quite simple, let's take a look at his chaining and finisher output and compare it to other current meta units % wise.
Since he isn't as tanky as Wilhelm, I will include his 150% DEF self buff from hitting <50% HP.

    Assuming 100% / 150% DEF buff
    DEF post buff: 1575 / 1704
    Assuming spark chains
    Average chain mod: 3.675

    100% buff Turn X: 1575^2 x 3.85 x 6.5 x 3.675 = 228,135,329
    -> 11% lower than Orlandeau ( 256,711,723 )
    -> 13% lower than Lightning ( 261,137,574 )
    -> 20% lower than Squall ( 282,433,060 )
    -> 38% lower than Nalu ( 365,676,755 )

    150% buff Turn X: 1704^2 x 3.85 x 6.5 x 3.675 = 267,036,489
    -> 4% higher than Orlandeau
    -> <1% higher than Lightning
    -> 6% lower than Squall
    -> 27% lower than Nalu
His chaining damage is pretty good for now, especially if you proc the 150% DEF buff. Though that means your average damage will be lowered due to using his Provoke etc.

    Assuming 100% / 150% DEF buff
    DEF post buff: 1575 / 1704

    With 100% buff
    Takedown: 1575^2 x 3.85 x 9.5 x 4 = 362915437
    Limit Burst: 1575^2 x 3.85 x 12.1 x 4 = 462239662
    CD Move: 1575^2 x 3.85 x 18.5 x 4 = 706730062

    With 150% buff
    Takedown: 1704^2 x 3.85 x 9.5 x 4 = 424799020
    Limit Burst: 1704^2 x 3.85 x 12.1 x 4 = 541059805
    CD Move: 1704^2 x 3.85 x 18.5 x 4 = 827240198
I don't want to spam this review with numbers, if you are interested in Olive's and DKC's for comparison, I can provide it in the comments.
He will rank at #2 finisher currently. His CD move deals a lot of damage which matters the most, but even for early fights he can contribute with his Takedown.

    Viktor [IMG]VS [IMG]Wilhelm
    • Viktor has 40% DEF True Dualwield
    • Viktor has a 5 turn provoke
    • Viktor has strong DEF chains
    • Viktor has even stronger DEF finishers
    • Viktor has AoE 50% ATK/DEF or MAG/SPR breaks
    • Viktor has a 25% self mitigation
    • Both can be provoke tanks
    • Wilhelm has an AoE phys cover
    • Wilhelm has way higher base DEF
    • Wilhelm has way higher defensive passives
    • Wilhelm has ignore fatal attacks
    • Wilhelm heals ~3k HP upon guarding
    • Wilhelm has ST 60% ATK or MAG breaks
    • Wilhelm has a self 90% physical mitigation
    • Wilhelm has an AoE 1 turn 54% mitigation (LB)
    • Wilhelm has a 40% self mitigation
Viktor mainly as a tank has nothing to use over Wilhelm other than damage.
This is why I said Viktor is more of a fun unit, the support he offers isn't nearly as defining as Wilhelm's. His AoE 50% ATK/DEF and MAG/SPR breaks have a weird split that isn't prefered over the traditional breaksplits in almost any trial while Wilhelm's breaks are ST, though a lot lot stronger and higher duration.
Wilhelm's innate higher mitigation and way higher stats will make him ~58% tankier compared to Viktor's highest e.HP build (which isn't the same as the ones you've seen in the BiS section). This means Wilhelm is A WHOLE lot more tanky than the build provided for Viktor's damage output.
While at that, Wilhelm's massive LB support through 60% counters, AoE LB fillrate counters and even his own 3 auto LB + insane Limit Burst just makes him a monster.
The fact that Wilhelm has an AoE cover isn't even considered in this comparison, which makes Wilhelm a much better tank overall.
Viktor mostly makes it up for being a damage dealer rather than a tank, but I feel like showing you how Viktor actually does as a tank compared to Wilhelm, so here you have it. And if you only want some side damage, Wilhelm's breaks have a 400% DEF scaling. Not much, but it can deal a little bit of damage.
    Wilhelm wins as a tank.

    Trust Master Reward:
    Viktor's
TMR is amazing. 20% HP, 30% DEF, high HP regens and 10% MP refresh. You combine mostly Patriotic Recall with Ayaka's TMR.
This TMR can be used on literally anyone if you lack the MP regens. A healer such as LM Fina, a support like HT Lid or MS Nichol and even tanks like Wilhelm can make use of this well. Viktor obviously wants his own TMR, too.
If you get it, just go for it. I can see a lot of usage for this one.

    Super Trust Master Reward:
80% DEF when equipped with H.Armor as well as sleep, petrification, paralyze and confusion resistance... That's pretty good.
All the status ailment resistance basically mean your tank won't have to worry about any of that and maybe even freeing up a slot you'd use for ribbon. Issue is, Grand Helm also has 2 out of these as ailment resistances and we currently only have a 300% stat cap, so this STMR doesn't even make it into tank BiS outside of fights with pesky status ailments.
In the future it will be tank BIS most likely while being great for Viktor and the future Gabranth.
Would I get it over using 2 Viktors? Currently no due to Viktor's Arena potential or even using two of him as a chainer.

    Conclusion:
    Viktor
    is a fun unit.
There were some who more or less praised him for being such a slot efficient machine. I don't fully agree on Viktor's potential.
Viktor's damage output currently is really good, especially as a finisher he can dish out a lot of damage. If you fight humans and machines you can make him a monstrous damage dealer currently while (depending on the fight) also provoke tanking.
But some current trials will still deal a lot of damage to him if you choose to make him a damage dealer. If you need survivability you will lose a good amount of damage and dualwield finishers can be tricky to fit into chainers. Especially chainers like Nalu who have a short and fast one.
In the future he will get Loren as a chaining partner, which from our current perspective is just op. Provoking + chaining with another insane support is outstanding. But the meta will shift from AoE tank + provoke tank to mostly a single AoE tank. 7* units become a lot tankier, more damage sources will come from AoE damage, we will have access to stronger breaks and buffs and all of that. And most importantly: AoE tanks will be able to provoke. That doesn't mean Viktor will die, but he might not fit into every team. While Loren as a support herself is more than worthy a unit slot and can be used in literally every team, her chaining capabilities are just a nice addition.
Viktor right now is amazing even if he isn't as supportive as I'd like my tank to be. In the future he might become a bit more niche compared to other team compositions, but damage wise serviceable and will always have the provoke + chaining niche or even just as a really bulky attacker.
I wouldn't recommend going for him if you don't lack damage or tanks as Viktor doesn't seem to be an investment for the future, but his unique traits he has make him a really fun unit and depending on your team very slot efficient.

I came back from Cologne and met a lot of people. I'm most likely going to post something about my trip. There are also several pictures where you can see me, though I wish I paid more attention to my hair. #badhairdayeveryday
Also, this is the section where I can ramble... I can finally go back to my workout schedule. The past weeks have been pretty much "no long workout sessions". Exams -> parties -> being sick -> Trip to Corfu -> Being sick again -> recovery -> trip to Cologne. FINALLY.

She's a very nice person and just because someone works for a company you don't personally like doesn't make her a bad person.

Nice review Meme, kind of what I was thinking about him, except you added the maths to it.
    Thanks!

I never said it does; I don't like Man Utd players, even though I'm sure they aren't bad people. When they leave/retire their slate is clean.

question - you use FD, yet that means his tdw def doesn't proc - wouldn't it be better to use the dw setup?

    Thanks for the review!!!
So debating how I should approach lorens7* because I have 4 of her, but should I try to grab another 30hit chain partner along the way or not get her tmr? No need for reply, just something to think about :^D

Just me, I'd get two of her TMR in case they ever turn the meta around with a DW physical DPS, and then it depends. If you get 4 g
Hyou, for instance, then her STMR is weaker, so I'd just 7 star her first hen wait until after the next 7* batch and then decide

Ain't there a 4k hp barrier on that move too ? That alone makes it a lot more worth it on early fight (if you can't break, buff and all at once for example) than you make it sound, right ?
Else, nothing much to say. Good review :)

40% TDW doesn't add that much whereas FD adds an average x3.85 damage variance. And if you want him to be max e.HP you will use a shield as well.

It does, but I don't write down stats that aren't benefitting the unit.

Added it as a small information, though I still don't think it's very good.

    Thank you very much.

Can't really say how bad or good it is, but I didn't expect anything out of it and the support is amazing. :)

The error is mostly in the concept how the company system work while the worker try their best to do the job inside the given parameters.
There is the saying that the responsibility lies always in the hands of the person who is in the charge.
Therefore dont hate the workers for the brainfarts that comes from the top management.
